Message from the Chair

When a new work of architecture is introduced into a city, it reshapes the order of that city. It makes us rethink what the city is and what it can be. Architecture can provide solutions for the issues that face society, promote discourse and define and reflect who we are and what we believe. The work of the students and faculty in the Department of Architecture at Florida International University embraces this role of architecture as an active participant in the shaping of our world. We are a diverse group of designers, researchers, makers and historians who work collaboratively to find thoughtful, elegant and sustainable solutions that engage current challenges with new ideas.

Our school is an exciting place for students to gain a broad range of skills and experiences. Students work and study with our talented faculty in many contexts: in the studio and the classroom, in our digital and fabrication labs, in our new Structures and Environment Technologies lab, on our study abroad programs to cities around the world and on funded research and creative projects. At FIU, architecture is an academic pursuit which involves learning by making and by experiencing the tangible realities of building. We offer a vigorous 5- or 6-year Master of Architecture accredited by the National Architectural Accreditation Board (NAAB) and a post-professional Master of Arts in Architecture. After this robust education, our graduates will have engaged in the rewarding art of architecture and will be exceedingly well prepared to contribute to practice and the profession, teaching or further graduate study.
