TEDxFIU Club

TEDxFIU Club at FIU brings together students who are interested in public speaking. Primary purpose of the club is to give its members a chance to work together to prepare a TEDxFIU talk, practice the speech, and perfect it. Besides TEDxFIU talks, the club also engages in various activities; such as speech viewings and analysis, speech competitions, and practicing different types of speech, which help the members become effective public speakers and public speech consumers.

Speak-Off

The Speak-Off is a bi-annual speech competition open to all students wanting to showcase their speaking abilities. Speeches adhere to a selected theme and applicants develop their speeches to educate, inform and inspire.  After an audition process, finalists are chosen to present their orations before a live audience of their peers. The Communication Arts Studio prepares these finalists through one-on-one training prior to the live event. This contest is an outstanding opportunity for students to showcase their public speaking skills and celebrate the art of communication.

Communication Facilitation

Communication Arts’ faculty and administrators serve as communication facilitators for a number of non-profit entities including the City of Miami’s Educational Advisory Board and the Liberty City Community Revitalization Trust.

Communication Facilitation involves objective, third-party facilitators working to insure successful group communication.Communication Facilitators work closely with organizations to plan, organize and conduct group events ranging from staff meetings, strategic planning sessions, administrative and executive retreats, and board meetings.

Communication facilitators help with the selection, design and implementation of the best meeting and communication strategy based on a group’s purpose and stage in development. Whether a group or organization is in the midst of complicated deliberation or the exploratory process of discovering concepts and determining the size and scope of a problem, communication facilitators can assist participants in accomplishing their goals. Facilitated communication can aid in team building, networking, and in designing and developing interventions and solutions. Communication facilitators work with groups to design meetings for the intended purpose and task.

Communication facilitators insure equitable group-member participation by ensuring that group discussions are not monopolized by a few voices and contributors. Communication facilitators work to insure equitable stakeholder participation by developing an environment in which every contribution is valued and explored. They guide participants in the expression of ideas using public terms, sharing speaking space and time equitably, and maintaining an atmosphere of mutual respect. Through these processes, communication facilitators help guarantee the full contribution of all group members.

Sweetwater Resume and Interviewing Workshops

In an effort to not only engage, but also to revitalize the local community, the Communication Arts Department provides resume and interview preparation workshops for the City of Sweetwater. They collaborate with job seekers to help fulfill their employment goals and insure success in their professional lives.
