Knight Innovator in Residence

The College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) at Florida International University invites applications for the 2016-2017 Knight Innovator in Residence position.

This is a 9-month visiting faculty position based in CARTA’s School of Communication + Journalism (SCJ). The SCJ is looking for media innovators who want to shape the future of digital media and journalism education and add to the growing innovation ecosystem in Miami. The initiative is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Miranda Mulligan is an award-winning journalist and product designer living and working in Miami and Milwaukee. She has expertise designing editorial products, having spent most of her career in and around newsrooms. She consults with numerous media brands and professional organizations, designing and producing innovation experiences to be shared with the world.

Mulligan is a Society for News Design board member and its digital director. Previously, she was a creative director at National Geographic Society, the executive director of the award-winning Northwestern U. Knight Lab, and the digital design director at The Boston Globe. In 2011, She led the responsive design approach to BostonGlobe.com, a project that was the recipient of numerous awards and oft referenced as a key moment in digital media publishing.

During her appointment, Mulligan is providing consulting, mentoring and networking to FIU students, faculty as well as Miami’s media and startup community at large. Specifically, she is focusing on three core areas:

  • Supporting digital literacy education for the journalism, advertising and public relations students and faculty.
  • Producing a premiere event in collaboartion with FIU’s Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center and School of Communication + Journalism; and
  • Developing interdisciplinary beyond-the-classroom programming and opportunities for SCJ students and faculty within StartupFIU.
