During the Viva Florida 500 Southeast Region Partners’ Meeting on November 27th, 2012, Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner joined FIU College of Architecture + The Arts Artist-in-Residence Xavier Cortada in planting and dedicating wildflower garden to Juan Ponce de Leon at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens on Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida.
Award winning FIU Alumnus Damir Siovcic shares his passion for architecture
Damir Sinovcic is an award-winning designer, editor, and author. His recent books include 100 Florida Architects and Interior Designers and 50 US Architects: Residenital + Planning. A graduate of the FIU School of Architecture, Damir has taught architecture courses at the University of Miami and Florida International University.
FIU Alumni Maria Lino featured in Latino Magazine
Maria Lino recently exhibited her 'This and That: Unconventional Selections from the Permanent Collection and Shared Threads: Maria Lino’s Portrait of a Shipibo Healer' in the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum and was featured in the Latino Magazine. Maria graduated from FIU with a Master in Fine Art in 2008.
Guatemala's UFM hosts FIU Architecture Professor Rosales
FIU's Professor Camilo Rosales was recently invited by the Francisco Marroquin University (UFM) in Gautemala to deliver a lecture about his professional work in architecture. The trip had a parallel agenda for finding common ground on possible collaborations and student exchanges during summer. Professor Rosales plans to take a group of architecture students to Guatemala next summer to study Pre-Columbian and colonial architecture with an emphasis in the American Tropics. Part of the trip may take place at the beautiful UFM campus which is hidden in a rainforest mini-valley within the sprawling capital city.

Miami Dade College students collected mangrove propagules at Matheson Hammock and exhibited the propagules in clear, water-filled cups at MDC Medical and InterAmerican campuses. Here, the propagules are nurtured into seedlings, and on December 1st, students will plant them along coastal areas.

On November 14th , volunteers joined CARTA‘s Office of Engaged Creativity (OEC) Artist-in-Residence and Director, Xavier Cortada, in the annual engagement of Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road store owners in its “Adopt a Seedling” eco-art effort.
Economies of Disease workshop and performance by visiting artist Marie Garlock
The Economies of Disease workshop and performance was developed alongside live audiences and started with the observation of the relationship between disease and consumer capitalist campaigns like the "Pink Ribbon" breast cancer movement. It is an experiment to explore collective and performance-based responses to medical and corporate organization of illness. The workshop held on Tuesday, November 13 at 7pm at the FIU MBUS Gallery was based on Marie Garlock's performance-centered work with persons facing life-threatening cancer and inspired by Geraldine Ondrizek's Inner Space, Global Matter exhibition.

: As part of his Materials and Methods Construction class and in celebration of Architecture month, Professor Jaime Canaves challenged 79 architecture students to construct 'shoes' that would enable them to walk on water.

FIU's Amernet String Quartet is off to the races at Kennedy Center
There’s fast and then there’s really, really fast, which is how the Amernet String Quartet, FIU’s Ensemble-In-Residence, motored past the finish line of the Beethoven Op. 95 String Quartet in its Fortas Chamber Music concert at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater on Friday, October 26th. Performing music by Haydn and Beethoven, the Amernet Quartet was joined by virtuoso pianist James Tocco for Franck's monumental Piano Quintet.

Reclamation Project presented at Kendall & Hialeah Miami Dade College campuses
On October 23rd and 30th, 2012, CARTA OEC Director and Artist-in-Residence Xavier Cortada discussed his Reclamation Project at Miami Dade College Kendall and Hialeah campuses. The Reclamation Project is a participatory eco-art project created by Xavier Cortada in 2006 to engage volunteers in the coastal reforestation of mangroves. It explores our ability to coexist with the natural world.

Internationally renowned American operatic Baritone, Sherrill Milnes and his wife, Soprano, Maria Zouves, will visit FIU’s School of Music for a week long residency during November 4th -10th. They will be hosted by Dr. Brian Schriner, Dean of Architecture and the Arts, during which time the two will perform at FIU’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center with other top musicians, work with student ensembles, conduct masterclasses, and appear at the Music Education Professional Development Day on November 6th at The School of Music.

Mendoza travels to Gabon in West Africa
Graduating from FIU in 2010 with a Bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture (BLA’10), Ailyn Mendoza worked with local and national design firms until returning to graduate school. In academia and professional practice, Mendoza has a vested interest in the evolution of reactionist landscape typologies and their relationships to climate change, rapid urbanization, and biodiversity protection.

Kletzki concerto proves a real discovery in FIU’s Polish program

The FIU Chamber Players presented a challenging program of works by Polish composers Tuesday evening at Florida International University’s Wertheim Auditorium. Chopin’s late Cello Sonata provided an interlude of calm between an intense, late 20th-century masterpiece by Witold Lutoslawski and an intriguing rarity by Paul Kletzki. Violinist Robert Davidovici, director of the university’s chamber music series, was the impressive protagonist in two major violin works.
