FIU Interior Architecture, in partnership with IIDA & NEWH, will host its 2nd Annual Emerge event (formerly known as Student Day) for all South Florida Interior Architecture & Design students on Saturday, February 2nd from 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM. This all day event will bring together students, design professionals, educators, and manufacturers’ representatives for a variety of sessions that will educate students about different career paths within the industry, give them the opportunity to speak with working professionals about their portfolios, and introduce them to cutting-edge ideas in hands-on workshops that will make students rethink the way they design.

Join us on Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 from 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM at the Paul L. Cejas Architecture Building located at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus (11200 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33199). Registration details will follow.

Emerge kicks off with an event orientation and welcome by the organizing committee.

During the registration process, participants are able to choose from 9 different 50-minute workshops to build their own unique experience. The 101 Workshops and NEWH Speed Networking + Portfolio Workshop run concurrently to allow for smaller, more intimate groups.

Elena Manferdini

Elena Manferdini, principal and owner of Atelier Manferdini, has over fifteen years of professional experience in architecture, art, design, and education. She is a licensed engineer in Italy, and a licensed architect in Switzerland. She received a Professional Engineering Degree from the University of Civil Engineering (Bologna, Italy) and a Master of Architecture and Urban Design from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).

Elena currently teaches at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and is the Graduate Programs Chair. In 2014 she held the Howard Friedman Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of California Berkeley (UCB). She has also held Visiting Professor positions at Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania and Seika University.

She frequently lectures, and her work has been exhibited internationally in both architecture and art museums.

In 2017 her facade for Alexander Montessori School in Miami, Florida received 2 AIA Miami design award: People’s Choice award of excellence and Merit Award of excellence. In 2016 Elena Manferdini was awarded the PAN Award for best public art project in North America. Her artwork is part of the permanent collections of SFMoMA and LACMA. In 2013 she won the COLA Fellowship given by City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs to support the production of original artwork. In 2013 she received a Graham Award for architecture, the 2013 ACADIA Innovative Research Award of Excellence, and she was selected as recipient for the Educator of the Year presidential award given by the AIA Los Angeles. In 2011 she was one of the recipients of the prestigious annual grants from the United States Artists (USA) in the category of architecture and design.


The Panel Breakfast is a moderated forum where Student Day participants will hear personal experiences and design views from an industry leader, a hiring manager, and new recruits.

Jennifer Delmas | Edge of Architecture
Jennifer Delmas | Edge of ArchitectureDirector of Firm Operations

Jennifer is the Director of Firm Operations at Edge of Architecture Miami, Florida. Before her journey with EOA, Jennifer received her Bachelor’s in Business Administration as well as Management and Legal studies at the University of Miami. Jennifer has also worked as Director of Firm and Human Resources at Miller, Kagan, Rodriguez and Silver. Jennifer currently serves on the executive committee for NEWH as the South Florida Chapter President.

Aida Lora | AECOM

Aida Lora is a Designer at AECOM and is a FIU Alumni where she received her Masters in Interior Architecture. Before attending FIU, Aida received her Bachelor’s in Architecture from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic. Aida serves on the IIDA South Florida Chapter Board as VP Advocacy. Aida currently is also a  Adjunct Professor at Miami International University. Aida is a LEED Green Associate and is an Allied ASID member. Aida served as the past co-chair for emerging professionals with the USGBC Miami Chapter.

Scheherezade Marles is a Designer for Studio Dado Inc. Marles is a LEED  Green Associate and is an Associate of IIDA. Before her time at Studio Dado Marles worked for both CallisonRTKL and Borges Architects. She is a FIU  Alumni and it is where she received her Masters of Interior Architecture.


The 101 Sessions and PR&I (Portfolio and Resume Reviews & Mock Interviews) are a collection of presentation and feedback sessions focusing on basic knowledge that every emerging design professional needs. Katie is the Co-Founder & Designer with Errez Design Studio. Born and raised in Miami , Katie was always exercising her creativity and imagination through different outlets, eventually she found her passion for design. Katie attended University of Florida and received her masters in Architecture .After a few years of working for a firm called MC Harry in Coconut Grove ,Katie believed she could do more to be a bigger part of the design industry so she and her husband Reban, co founded  Errez Design Studio. Katie is also a part-time professor at FIU. Now, Katie is not only a professor but also a interior designer, mom, wife, and entrepreneur and she loves every minute of it.

Kendra Kirchmer a designer and former architect founded Studio Kirchmer in Miami, Florida. Since its inception in 2016 the Studio has gained international and national attention through exhibitions in Milan & NYC. Kirchmer is an artist, designer and educator whose work celebrates precise moments; a simple connection detail, the amazing variations in tone found in a single piece of walnut, or even the sound of a drawer opening and closing. Her products are inspired by these simple moments of fascination, activity, and use.She recently completed her MFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she was awarded the President’s Scholarship. Before turning her focus to furniture, she practiced both residential and commercial Architecture at nationally recognized design firms around the country.

Bryan is the Director of Design for Hilton Latin America & the Caribbean. His ten year career has focused on International Hospitality design and architecture, with a portfolio of completed luxury hotels, lifestyle properties and resorts spanning five continents. He has taught graduate design studio at Texas Tech University and Florida International University. Prior to joining Hilton Worldwide, he was a Senior Project Designer with The Gettys Group and the Design Director for RAD Architecture. Bryan currently sits on the NEWH Executive Committee, and received his Master’s of Architecture (M.Arch) from Texas Tech University.

Steve Burgos is a Technical Designer with Gensler Miami. In the 2017 IIDA BRAGG Awards, Steve was awarded Designer of the Year because of his powerful force of positivity, dedication, and talent. Steve is currently on the board of the IIDA South Florida Chapter and serves as the President Elect. Steve is also a active member of the Miami design community, a AIA member and is NCIDQ certified. Steve has also written a publication with Gensler called Re-tooling the Suburban Office Building. Before moving to Miami, Steve started his journey with Gensler in Gensler Morristown.  Steve graduated with his Bachelors of Architecture from New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Brittany has over 11 years experience in Sustainable Design and Construction. Brittany has received her MBA un Sustainable Business and Green Development from Marylhurst University and her Bachelors in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida Atlantic University. Brittany also has an Associates degree in Architectural Design from Palm Beach State College.

Whether it’s in the office, at the drawing board or in the dojo, Daphne is a force to be reckoned with. She’s a passionate overachiever, determined to rise above. As the founder and Principal of Gurri Matute, she leads with an against-all-odds ambition. Tell her something can’t be done and you’ll get a flash of her trademark smile when she proves you wrong. Inspired by the ability to influence the built world, Daphne has dedicated the last 26 years of her professional life to architecture and design. When she’s not conquering the architectural world, Daphne is ardent about showing young girls they can kick butt inside and outside the workplace – promoting the opportunities of STEM-careers and serving as a role model for aspiring architects and engineers.

On her days off, when she’s not crushing it at Karate Dojos and Capoeira Rodas, Daphne enjoys her favorite roles as a wife and mother of three. Daphne holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami and a Master’s Degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University. She is also certified to practice Architecture and Interior Design in the State of Florida.

Virgilio Campaneria, AIA, RID | HealthCare Division

From the start of his career, Virgilio “Virgil” Campaneria has been making the seemingly impossible, possible. As a United States Air Force Pararescue member, his sole goal was to rescue, recover and return those in danger or harm’s way. Virgil’s ability to with difficult situations and complete unimaginable projects is just part of the reason for his success as an architect for the past 28 years. As Gurri Matute’s Healthcare Principal, he is leading the company’s expanding role as a firm that provides healthcare professionals with the best spaces and environment to assist and promote healing and wellbeing. Virgil holds a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the University of Miami and he is Certified to practice Architecture and Interior Design in the State of Florida.

He has been a leader in the AIA at local, state, and national levels. He has served on the AIA Florida Board for four years and has served the last two years as AIA Florida Vice President of Professional Development and Membership Committees. His efforts have resulted in refining professional development programs and services to meet the needs of all our members by providing programming to Associates and Young Architects. In 2016, his committee developed a scholarship resource guide.

As VP of Membership Virgil has lead the effort to survey membership as to their expectations and to provide value to our membership.

His 2015 initiative The Gubernatorial Appointment Toolkit or (GAP) won a 2015 AIA Component Excellence Award. The Toolkit intended to raise architects political influence by providing a catalog of key seats on boards throughout the state.

Virgil served at the AIA National level as Regional Director of Young Architects Forum (YAF) from 2007-2009, disseminating information to young architects about national and regional activities and local resources.

In 1998, Virgil developed the ARE Preparation Program, which is now the state and national model and has resulted in hundreds of licensees. The program received a AIA National Component Excellence Award in 2004.

Christina Conde was an Associate Project Manager & Senior Interior Designer  at Edge of Architecture and is also a LEED Green Associate. Conde has a demonstrated history of working on high-end Hospitality and Multi-Residential design projects. Conde has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) focused in Interior Design from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Christian Triana is a Senior Project Designer at Edge of Architecture and  is a LEED Green Associate. Christian received his Bachelors in Interior Design from University of Florida before moving down to Miami.  Christian’s design work is characterized by holistic approaches to design problems through research and analysis of a client’s key identity attributes and goals. He believes design should motivate and inspire people through innovation, make bold statements, generate optimistic attitudes towards life, create cultural connections, and contribute to a strong sustainable society. Christian has  worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from retail design to hospitality and multifamily developments in which he not only created functional spaces but also developed the ultimate “life-style” for the end user. Christian has also been delighted to showcase his design strengths through programming, conceptual development, space planning, FF&E specifications, and construction administration in the US as well as Latin America.

Taylor Kuzia | Lemon Yellow

Taylor Kuzia is a Project Manager at Lemon Yellow, a Miami-based Branding & Design studio. She received her BFA in Print/Bookmaking from the University of Georgia – Lamar Dodd School of Art. Prior to living in Miami, Taylor was a freelance graphic and resume designer in Richmond, Va. Her interests include type design, crossword puzzles and floral arranging.

Natalia Gonzalez | Lemon Yellow

Natalia Gonzalez is a Graphic Designer at Lemon Yellow, a Miami-based Branding & Design studio. Before joining Lemon Yellow, she attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where she studied illustration and graphic design.



Designers have pendant setup, art supplies and 30 minutes to create a paper pendant. Later votes are cast and the winner gets to see their paper fixture transformed into a glowing LightArt creation.
