2017 Conference: Women in Communication – Breaking the Barriers

The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University’s College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts hosted the Second Annual Conference, “Women in Communication: Breaking the Barriers.”   on April 20, 2017.  This national one-day conference was keynoted in the morning by Anne Vasquez, Chief Digital Officer of Tronc, Inc., formerly Tribune Publishing, and former managing editor of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, which won a Pulitzer Prize under her leadership.

The day’s events brought together industry professionals and scholars from around the country.  Conference participants explored the role of women in leadership positions in the fields of advertising, broadcasting, digital media, newspaper, public relations, and magazines.   It is a decades-long discussion that even now has reached no consensus or conclusion: Where are women in the ranks of communication professions? If they are not leading, where are they and what are they doing? Our conference highlighted the center’s breadth and depth of expertise and experience, a highly visible platform for sponsors to demonstrate their support of our mission and vision.
