Editor | El Sentinel

LFP - Mentors (Deborah Ramirez) PhotoI’m the executive editor of El Sentinel, the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Spanish-language weekly. I oversee a staff of 3 and have watched El Sentinel grow from 60,000 in 2002 to current 147,000 copies. A few years ago, we joined forces with our sister paper in Orlando to serve more than 200,000 readers in South and Central Florida.

I was born in New York City and moved with my family to Puerto Rico at age 12. This was a defining moment in my life. I learned to read and write in Spanish, and I also learned to appreciate people from different backgrounds and socio-economic levels. I was enrolled in a small rural school and some of my classmates were the children of sugarcane workers. These lessons have stayed with me for the rest of my life and career. I’ve been with the Sun Sentinel since 1992 and with El Sentinel since 2002. I am single, no children, but blessed with wonderful nieces and nephews. Sadly, my partner for the past five years, Gus Lezcano, died last year. He was a gifted musician who performed with the early Miami Sound Machine, and a dedicated public school music teacher. I honor his memory.

Besides news, music, films, travel and food, in that order. Also an avid thrift-shop, vintage fan. I love the blues, Latin jazz and old-school salsa. I worship singer-songwriters, in Spanish and English.
