Driven by a flourishing creative economy, the visual arts are defining and fueling South Florida’s economic and cultural growth. Today, Miami is recognized as one of the world’s most important arts communities– home to renowned cultural institutions, international art fairs, and prominent art collectors. This environment provides an incubator for creative endeavors that garner international attention. However, there is a critical missing piece in our community: a world class MFA program to establish Miami as the educational center of excellence for visual artists, designers and curators (art professionals).
FIU Visual Arts would be the primary location of a trans-disciplinary, truly international Master of Fine Arts program, which would be staffed with prominent practicing global artists, designers, and creative industries visionaries who are at the height of their careers. The innovative curriculum will encourage exploration of the synergy between traditional and experimental media with maximum flexibility to accommodate both those seeking advanced training in a particular studio area and those whose interests may involve more media crossover. Simultaneously, the program will prepare MFA curatorial practice students to take a responsible and critical approach to the expanding role curators play in creating a vibrant cultural life in a post-millennial global society, which is increasingly being re-defined, re-drawn, and re-charted.
