A Degree in Instrumental Performance, Wind, Brass & Percussion Studios

Wind and percussion students are offered a dynamic curriculum that includes studying with an outstanding artist-faculty, renowned for their work as award-winning soloists and as principal players in the regional orchestras of South Florida and beyond. Guest artists and artist-in-residence programs continually expose students to an extensive array of significant musicians, thus broadening their musical network and expertise. The curriculum places emphasis on solo performance, chamber music, and large ensemble performance.

Audition Requirements

All prospective students must submit a high quality video or audio recording, five to seven minutes in length, of the items listed below in audition information. Include a brief description of your experience (in school or otherwise) and with whom you have studied.

  • All major scales- ascending and descending
  • Chromatic scale for the playing range of instrument
  • Two excerpts/etudes of contrasting style of your choice

Requirements for Percussion Students

Mallets: Xylophone, Vibraphone and Marimba will be provided

  • All major scales and arpeggios- ascending and descending
  • One excerpt/etude using two mallets of your choice
  • One excerpt/etude using four mallets of your choice

Snare Drum: Snare Drum will be provided upon request

  • One etude of your choice

Timpani: Timpani will be provided

  • Two excepts/etudes of contrasting style

 

Audition Dates

Qualified candidates will be invited to audition in person at FIU. Organized auditions are held three times per year, but can be scheduled at other times throughout the year upon request. Applicants who wish to be considered for University merit-based scholarships should attend the November audition date. Theory and history placement tests will be given during organized audition days.

Upcoming audition dates include: November 18, 2023 | February 17, 2024 | and March 16, 2024.
