Originally from Queens, NY, Cindy Mesa moved to Miami at the age of 12. She worked for the University of Miami for 8 years in accounting and as an assistant advisor for International Student and Scholar Services. She holds an A.A. from Miami Dade College in Theater/Theater Education and is currently working on a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology at FIU. She began working at the FIU School of Music in April 2015 where she hopes to create a positive environment that exemplifies the highest commitment to quality and service to our students, faculty, and staff.
Edda Juarez, Financial Analyst for the School of Music, began her FIU career began in 2005 at The College of Education where she started as a Clerk in the Dean’s Office. Through the years she promoted to Senior Secretary, to Budget Coordinator, and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2007 as well as an MBA in 2009. Upon graduation, she moved over to The Center for Children and Families as the Administrative Director. She also had the opportunity to work on the College of Arts & Sciences’ Title V Project Gateways Program where interventions were implemented to increase retention and graduation rates of students with Hispanic origins.
Admissions and Recruitment Officer
Tavares Scott serves as the admissions and recruitment officer for the School of Music where he supports all activities related to recruitment, admissions, enrollment, retention, and matriculation of students. He earned a B.A.S. in Supervision & Management from Miami Dade College and an M.S. in Management from St. Thomas University. He has worked for Miami Dade College for 9 many years as the administrative support to the dean’s office.
Undergraduate Academic Advisor
Gerry Suarez earned a B.A. in English and an M.M. in Performing Arts Management from FIU. He has been working at FIU since 2007 and was first hired by Undergraduate Admissions as an admissions counselor and recruiter. He has also worked for OneStop Enrollment Services and Transfer and Transition Services before finding his home in the College of Architecture and the Arts where he is currently the advisor for the School of Music and the Department of Theatre.
Michelle Vires joined the College of Architecture + The Arts as the marketing coordinator for the School of Music in late 2012 where she supported print, online, and radio marketing campaigns and created all publicity materials including press releases, flyers, brochures, and ads. Originally from Cincinnati, OH, she brings with her experience in higher education and years of overseeing and designing musician press kits as a freelance manager.
Senior Events Manager
Nathalie Brenner is serving as the senior special events manager at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center. She is responsible for managing all special events produced by the School of Music and Department of Theatre as well as serving as the logistical planner and on-site lead for external clients.
Program Asst, Bands
Ada Hidalgo has been the program assistant for the Marching Band since 2011. She assists the director of the program with matters concerning budget, purchasing, travel, scholarships, and hiring and supervising the student staff.
Since starting his career in show business more than 30 years ago as a classical music stage manager, Paul Steinsland has worked as an audio engineer and technical director in his native Canada and abroad in the cruise industry. In 2012, after settling in Miami, he earned his BA in Department of Theatre at FIU where he served as the sound engineer. Paul’s theatrical work in Miami has included sound designs for New Theatre, Main Street Players, and What If Works.
