Assistant Professor, Architecture and Structural Design

The Department of Architecture in the nationally ranked School of Architecture at Florida International University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-earning Assistant Professor of Architecture and Structural Design beginning August 13, 2026. This appointment has a focus on research and teaching of structures and design studios at both undergraduate and graduate levels, primarily within the professional Master of Architecture program.  

We invite dynamic individuals with expertise in structural design, holding an advanced professional degree in architecture, an engineering background, and university teaching experience. The successful candidate will teach core and advanced courses in structures and design studios while maintaining research that bridges architectural design and engineering principles. The ideal candidate will advance the field through peer-reviewed research, publication, and creative work.

We seek candidates with a proven record of bringing innovative approaches to teaching and research. Prior graduate teaching experience is essential, particularly in areas that emphasize the integration of engineering and architectural design. The ability to engage students through hands-on learning, critical thinking, and the application of emerging technologies will be highly valued.

The minimum academic credentials required for the position: The Master of Architecture, the Master of Science in Engineering, or the equivalent international degrees in Architecture, Engineering, or a closely related field.  The PhD, DDes, and/or professional licensure are preferred.

Within the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, the Department of Architecture resides in the School of Architecture, alongside the Department of Interior Architecture and the Department of Landscape Architecture + Environmental Urban Design. The 3 departments share a rich history of interdisciplinary design and research collaboration. All programs in the School of Architecture are designated as Federal STEM disciplines. This makes it possible for international students to apply for up to 3 years of employment in the United States under the OPT system. The School of Architecture was ranked in the Top 25 among public universities in North America by the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject.  

With over 600 students, the Department of Architecture educates future architects to become thoughtful practitioners and critical thinkers. Students arrive at various points in their educational careers—as freshmen, as third-year transfer students, and as graduate students, to pursue an accredited, professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree. The department has recently added the post-professional Doctor of Design (DDes) degree, which draws students internationally and offers them opportunities to teach and pursue funded research while studying.    

The School of Architecture is housed in the award-winning Paul L. Cejas School of Architecture Building designed by Bernard Tschumi, which includes the Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab, and the Structural and Environmental Technologies Lab. Additional School facilities include the Miami Beach Urban Studios, located in the heart of Miami Beach, home to the CARTA Innovation Lab.  

Our faculty is engaged in a wide range of research and creative activities in the areas of sustainability and climate change, urbanism and public space, affordable housing, green building automation, culture and history of global modernism, performative scripting, artificial intelligence, robotics, digital fabrication, and architectural installations. To enhance student learning and support faculty research, the Department offers a broad range of study abroad programs.

Associate/Full Professor of Interior Architecture

The Department of Interior Architecture in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts at Florida International University invites applications for a 9-month position at the Associate/Full Professor level with tenure starting in Fall of 2026.

Required Qualifications 

Applicants must have a graduate degree in Interior Architecture or Interior Design, or a related discipline.  Applicants must demonstrate an established record of success in research and teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level, as well as relevant professional experience and accomplishments. In addition, applicants must provide evidence that they will have academic and professional accomplishments commensurate with the proposed rank at the time of hire at FIU.  

Preferred Qualifications 

Applicants are preferred with a tenure track/tenured position in a School or Department of Interior Architecture or Interior Design, and/or professional degree in Interior Architecture/Design and with scholarship and/or teaching in one or more of the following areas: construction documents, design theory, lighting design, and computational design and media. The program also prefers candidates with NCIDQ Certification.

The Department of Interior Architecture is one of three disciplines within the School of Architecture, along with the departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design. The School of Architecture facilities are located in the award-winning Paul L. Cejas School of Architecture Building designed by Bernard Tschumi, which includes the Fabrication, Robotics and Digital Fabrication, and Structural and Environmental Technologies Labs. An additional facility is the collaborative hub, known as the School of Architecture Miami Beach Urban Studios, which houses 3D printing and laser cutting technologies. Through real-world experiential-learning opportunities conducted by FIU by Design, our faculty and expert professionals align our pedagogy with project deliverables for a wide range of clients and organizations. The School of Architecture also offers a minimal-residency Doctor of Design program, providing specialized credentials for advanced professional and applied academic research. 

Our faculty members in Interior Architecture are engaged in a variety of research and innovative teaching activities. While we address specific interior typologies of our region, ranging from healthcare, hospitality, retail, and workplace design, we also engage in focused programs, including Cruise Ship Design. The program values and leverages its relationship with the professional Interior Design community. Robotics Research Specialist

The Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab Manager oversees daily operations of the School of Architecture’s RDF Lab and trains teaching assistants, students and staff in the safe use of all laboratory equipment. The role supervises industrial robotics systems, including KUKA and Universal robots, programmable devices and 3D printers such as MakerBot, Bamboo and Form 2, ensuring proper maintenance, storage and safe operation. Responsibilities include managing lab activities, providing technical instruction on equipment capabilities and limitations and developing and enforcing all lab safety procedures and policies. The manager administers safety trainings, ensures full compliance, contributes to the design and integration of new equipment and robotic end-effectors, and investigates and implements new techniques and technologies. Additional duties include designing and prototyping mechatronic systems to improve lab capabilities, identifying operational issues, recommending solutions and managing equipment purchasing for the Robotics Lab while adhering to University ProCard policies and documentation requirements.

Required Qualifications 

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of experience or Master’s degree and two (2) years of experience.

Desired Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Architecture, Design, or a related field. 
  • Demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining digital fabrication equipment. 
  • Experience in robotics operations. 
  • Experience in training and instructing others on the use of technical equipment and tools.
