Department of Architecture

We believe architecture to be a conceptually based intellectual endeavor and a form of critical inquiry that addresses the built and natural environments from the scale of the city to the scale of the detail. The department is committed to producing conceptual thinkers and skilled makers who are versed in the techniques and knowledge of the discipline and who are cognizant of: critical theory, history, science and progressive social values. To realize these objectives, design is taught as a critical, speculative and creative endeavor embracing both the humanities and the sciences.

Current & Prospective Students

DEGREES

The Department of Architecture prepares students for professional practice in the discipline of architecture with emphasis placed upon six thematic areas: architectural design, history/theory, building technologies, digital technology, ethics and professional business practice, and general education. We offer a NAAB accredited Master of Architecture (M. Arch) and the advanced post-professional Master of Arts in Architecture (MAA).

FACILITIES

The Paul L. Cejas School of Architecture Building is a state-of-the-art facility designed by renowned architect Bernard Tschumi specifically to meet the needs of the School of Architecture. Students work at dedicated desks in the spacious design studios, conduct design reviews in the critique rooms, build models and prototypes in the digital fabrication labs (which include state-of-the-art robotic arms and 3D printers), and exhibit their work in the gallery.

IPAL LICENSURE

Florida International University has been accepted to participate in the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL). This initiative provides students the opportunity to complete requirements for licensure while earning their degree. Spearheaded by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), the initiative enables accredited programs to incorporate professional experience and examination into curricula.

The Department of Architecture design curriculum includes a number of study abroad options. Our students are encouraged to participate in our programs abroad in Genoa, Italy, Dessau, Germany and Tokyo, Japan.
