SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director of Career Services will manage the Career Services team in serving 900+ graduate students at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The Director will provide strategic planning for programs; cultivate new employer contacts and expand reach across industries; develop depth of knowledge that is industry specific; and cultivate International development contacts. The Director leads the Career Services team in planning programs and events for GSD students, including skills-based workshops, portfolio reviews, and coordinating Alumni Conversation series. Additionally, the Director actively participates in special recruiting events, such as the GSD Virtual Career Fair, GSD Summer Internship Fair, GSD Graduating Student Career Fair and Harvard Real Estate Day.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and execute a series of career programs and workshops.
- Insure delivery of key career workshops, such as The Job Search for International Students, Job Interview and Salary Negotiation Skills.
- Cultivate relationships with senior faculty across programs.
- Collaborate with other Career Services Directors across Harvard to ensure GSD student access to recruiting events such as Urban Innovations I & II with Harvard Kennedy School.
- Collaborate with student groups to co-host relevant programs.
- Participate in national and local professional associations to expand employer connections.
- Participate in portfolio reviews, resume and cover letter reviews, and mock interview sessions.
- Responsible for educating students on the licensure process for architects (AXP Experience) and landscape architects (LARE).
- Collect Graduating Student salary data. Perform a 6 month follow up survey for each class to gather outcome data for accreditation purposes (architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning).
- Oversee staff in connecting with employers and approving (and utilizing) LinkedIn contacts.
- Oversee the Community Service Fellowship Program (CSFP), including promotion, coordination with CSFP selection committees, oversee CSFP summer payroll and collect social media material from recipients.
- Collaborate with Joint Center for Housing, the GSD Development Office, the Loeb Fellowship and the Harvard Real Estate Alumni Board to review and allocate Fellowship applications to appropriate channels.
- Manage the annual Paul M. Heffernan Prize and International Travel Community Service Fellowship awards.
- Oversee and develop content for the Career Services website, program-specific e-newsletters and other media.
- Oversee the GSD LinkedIn platform with over 4,600 members.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise 1-2 Career Services staff; overall responsibility for team of student workers.
- Hire, train and supervise GSD students to serve as career liaisons to their departments. Review student e-newsletters before they are distributed to fellow students in their programs.
- Hire, train and supervise 1-2 graduate interns. Supervise the creation and distribution of a weekly e-newsletter to all students; assign special projects.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree preferred; BA/BS degree required.
- 7+ years of experience leading a graduate level career services office, career counseling and experience with graduate students in career development and mentoring.
- Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with students, faculty, alumni and employers.
- Demonstrated ability to identify new career opportunities and build relationships.
- Demonstrated success at cultivating employer relationships to foster employment, internship and fellowship opportunities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral), strong presentation and networking skills.
- Significant experience in career advising for graduate students and alumni. Understanding of international student issues and challenges.
- Knowledge of a broad range of career fields related to studies at the Graduate School of Design (architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning & urban design, technology, sustainability, real estate).
- Technical proficiency in career management systems, Microsoft Office and database systems.
- Ability to build strong relationships with individuals across all levels.
- Ability to supervise teams successfully.
- Outstanding organizational and project management skills required.
- Excellent data gathering and assessment skills.
- Excellent follow through skills.
- Ability to manage a budget.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
There are no known physical requirements associated with this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is mainly performed in an office setting.
