Description of Shadowing Opportunity:

Get inside the mind of a museum conservator in this behind-the-scenes peek at the work of a professional! Dedicated to the preservation of historical artifacts, conservators apply their knowledge of art, science, and environmental risks to safeguard museum collection materials from harm. Hear from Silvia Manrique Tamayo, The Wolfsonian’s collections manager and conservator, to get a feel for her day-to-day at FIU’s Miami Beach art and design institution. 

Agenda:

  1. Welcome – 2 minutes
  2. Presenter introduction – 15 minutes
  3. Collections manager and conservator Silvia Manrique Tamayo introduces herself and outlines her role, briefly summarizing her education, career path, and experience.
  4. Participants introduction – 10–15 minutes

Students introduce themselves and share their major/future goals as well as their interest in art conservation.

  1. Informational Session(s) – 20–30 minutes
  2. Silvia talks about her work, explaining how she collaborates with registrars, curators, and librarians to assess an object’s needed care and treatment plan. She will share examples of specific conservation projects with before-and-after photos.
  3. Q&A: 15 minutes
