The Frances Loeb Library seeks a part-time Public Services Assistant to support researchers and librarians in the Special Collections Reading Room. This is an excellent opportunity to gain reference and special collections operations experience. Reporting to the Collections Strategy Team Lead and working closely with Collections Team members, the individual in this position will provide support in overseeing the reading room as well as with specific library projects and tasks. The position will support librarians in providing reference and public services to on-site library patrons and monitoring the operations of the reading room.
Available immediately, this is a 14-hour-per-week, year-round position. Preference will be given to graduate students.
Hours must be completed Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Nine of the 14 hours must include Tuesdays-Thursdays, either 9am-noon or noon-3pm.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Open and/or close the reading room three days per week, Tuesday-Thursday.
- Staff the reading room for six hours per week.
- Greet and assist researchers in use of Special Collections. Explain policies and procedures.
- With the guidance of librarians, provide reference and public services to researchers in the reading room.
- Assist patrons with public-facing library systems (including HOLLIS, HOLLIS for Archival Discovery, HOLLIS Images, Material Order SEARCH, and HOLLIS Special Request).
- Monitor the operations of the reading room.
- Provide instruction in the handling of archival, manuscript, materials, rare book, and visual collections.
- Work with library systems and tools (ArchivesSpace, CollectionSpace, AEON, others).
- Locate, retrieve, and re-shelve collection materials from stacks and from offsite storage.
- May assist librarians and archivists in special collections instruction (paging collections, setting up collection materials, proctoring use, etc.).
- May assist in processing of photoduplication requests.
- Support Collections Team projects related to the materials, rare-book, and general collections.
- Performs routine clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.
- May assist with collection management projects, including labeling, shelf reads, shifting, re-housing, and inventories on a limited basis.
Qualifications:
Library experience and/or customer service experience. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Strong attention to detail. Ability to multi-task and to complete work in a timely manner. Sensitivity to proper care and handling of special collections materials. A commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
Overview:
The Frances Loeb Library Special Collections include rare and unique materials that focus on the disciplines of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, including architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning and design. Our Special Collections include archival, materials, rare book, and visual collections, in addition to a collection of printed materials by and about Le Corbusier. These collections offer engaging documentation of design history, theory, and practice.
