The City of Leawood, Kansas will be accepting applications for the Building Inspector in the Building and Code Enforcement Department until February 28 2022. 

The Building Inspector performs on site inspections of new and existing residential construction projects, structures and systems and performs residential inspections as needed.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

  • Responsible for conducting field inspections on newly constructed, renovated and repaired residential buildings to ensure compliance with city approvals, approved plans and codes and ordinances. Duties include but are not limited to maintaining complete and accurate files of inspection reports, informing contractors of non-conformities and completing follow-up inspections.  
  • Reviews pending and approved permit applications to ensure compliance with City codes and ordinances. 
  • Keeps abreast of changes to the building codes, new construction products and techniques.
  • Provides technical advice and assistance to the development community and members of the public in the application of adopted codes and related planning and zoning ordinances.
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints from the public about residential construction projects, structures and systems and completes a follow-up in each situation as appropriate. 
  • Responsible for scheduling meetings with developers, owners, and contractors regarding but not limited to inspection routes, schedule and results. Ensures daily inspections are completed. 
  • Assists in reviewing pre-approved residential development and construction plans, including reading blueprints and technical diagrams, to determine compliance details prior to inspection.
  • May assist with plan review including reading blueprints and technical diagrams, ensuring compliance with national codes and local ordinances as well as ensuing the safety and quality of structures and systems prior to construction for decks, re-roofing, remodels, and minor additions.
  • May assist with providing administrative support to the Board of Zoning Appeals. 
  • Employee maybe asked by the supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job. 

 

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language with proper spelling and grammar to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with effective results.
  • Ability to establish and maintain detailed records and prepare accurate reports.
  • Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to make rational decisions efficiently during variable and sometime stressful conditions, including the ability to calmly interact with the public and other City personnel.
  • Ability to utilize permit tracking software system.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team and/or with the public. 
  • Ability to use standard office procedures, systems, and practices including the use of a computer.
  • Ability to use safe work practices while on the job.

  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel. 
  • Ability to understand and be proficient in the City’s permit software system. 

 

Education, Training, and Certification Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Must have two (2) years of experience in building trades, inspection or equivalent training; OR Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture or related field. 
  • Four (4) years of experience in in building trades, inspection, or equivalent training, preferred.
  • Must be able to maintain Erosion Control Inspector Certification through an accredited agency approved by the Director of Building and Code Enforcement within one (1) year of hire.
  • International Code Council Residential Building, Electrical, Mechanical and/or Plumbing Inspector, preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
