The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA or “the agency”) connects San Franciscans with their communities to enhance the economy, environment and, ultimately, the quality of life in the city. As an agency within the City and County of San Francisco, the SFMTA is responsible for managing the city’s transportation network. The agency has more than 6,000 employees who are responsible for the management of all ground and some underground transportation in the city. The SFMTA has oversight over public transit, as well as bicycling, paratransit, parking and curb management, street operations, walking, and taxis.

Role description

The internship is open to students who will be returning to school in Fall 2023 or who will have graduated within 6 months of Spring 2023. Applicants must be pursuing or have completed a degree in Urban Planning, Transportation, Transportation Engineering, Public Administration, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, Historical Preservation, Environmental Studies, or a related field. The 5381 classification is open to applicants with prior planning or relevant internship experience or who are pursuing a master’s degree or higher in a related field.

Planning interns within the Street Division are responsible for supporting project community outreach and engagement by attending stakeholder meetings, public meetings, and open houses, tabling at public events like Sunday Streets, soliciting and documenting community feedback through surveys, door-to-door outreach, phone calls, emails, surveys, and more; data collection and analysis (may involve fieldwork); assisting with policy development and/or report creation; conducting geospatial analyses and generating maps using ArcGIS; conducting surveys; support long-range transportation plans; and preparing presentations and/or project visuals. Responsibilities will vary depending on the team.

Planning teams within the Streets Division include:

o  Transportation Planning

o  Livable Streets

o  Curb Management

The internship program offers weekly seminars and field trips for interns to learn about various parts of the Agency. Attendance is mandatory at these events. Interns will also participate in Pecha Kucha presentations at the end of the summer.

The internship follows a 40-hour workweek, generally between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday to Friday. Work outside these hours may be required for fieldwork, outreach events, etc. Interns may be eligible for a flexible work schedule, subject to supervisor and division approval. Interns may work up to 1,040 hours in a fiscal year. Most intern positions will terminate at the end of summer; depending on the nature of the work, some positions may be eligible to continue into the school year, subject to supervisor and division approval.

How to qualify

Desired skills include planning theory, critical thinking, attention to detail, communication, and teamwork. Desired experience includes Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, database management, writing, public speaking, and/or community organizing/engagement. Students are encouraged to apply even if they do not have this prior experience.

What else should I know?

Interns follow the same telecommuting requirements as all City employees, with a requirement to work onsite at least three days per week (subject to change). Work at the office, fieldwork, outreach events, and field trips all count toward the onsite work requirement.

Intern salaries is $35.75 per hour.

Interns will also have free access to Muni for the duration of their internship.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: 

All City and County of San Francisco employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Someone is fully vaccinated when 14 days have passed since they received the final dose of a two-shot vaccine or a dose of a one-shot vaccine. Any new hire must present proof of full vaccination status to be appointed. Any new hire who will be routinely assigned or occasionally enter High-Risk Settings, must provide proof of having received a COVID-19 booster vaccine by March 1, 2022, or once eligible.
