 EXPERIENCED COMMUNITY PLANNER

Additional Information: The City of Leawood offers career development opportunities in which the employee could increase their experience, training, and pay. The position is eligible to receive merit based pay increases every year (merit increase up to 3.9% increase). Employees also receive a Time In Service Bonus every three years of employment on their anniversary date equal to 5% of their annual salary.  

Summary of the Position: The Planner participates in the City’s planning operations and development review, assists in the development of the Comprehensive Plan update, provides staff support for the Planning Commission; participates in the preparation and presentation of reports, and assists in the completion of assigned planning projects. Acts as project manager for assigned projects.

General Overview of Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for the review of commercial and residential development and sign applications to ensure conformity with the principles of good planning and land use practices and for compliance with the City of Leawood’s Development Ordinance, codes, policies and guidelines. 
  • Responsible for the creation and review of illustrations, maps, plans, plats, designs or other work for current planning, long-range planning, subdivision development, and land use regulation activities.
  • Responsible for review and analysis of planning development applications from submission through construction.
  • Responsible for conducting landscape reviews for compliance with approved plans and producing an annual landscape report. 
  • Responsible for gathering, researching, analyzing, and preparing staff reports for development applications and presenting reports to the Planning Commission and Governing Body.
  • Responsible for preparing written documents and staff reports for the Comprehensive Plan, development ordinance amendments, presentations and special projects, including the research and interpretation of the data.
  • Acts as main point of contact for applicants throughout the development review process.
  • Responds to inquiries from the development community and members of the public concerning zoning and subdivision regulations and ordinances.    
  • Provides administrative support for the Planning Commission and will be required to attend meetings.  
  • Reviews public records for ownership and zoning concerns for compliance with ordinances.
  • Assists in maintaining the department planning files including development ordinance amendments, development application case files, Comprehensive Plan, subdivision, and zoning.

 

Minimum Requirements: Must have a Bachelor Degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture or related field. A Master’s Degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture or related field would substitute for one (1) year of experience. Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in planning or community development, three (3) years of experience, preferred. Experience working with ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign and Bluebeam, preferred. Experience in a municipality, preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
