The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey offers paid internships to students that provide the opportunity to work with knowledgeable and experienced professionals on assignments critical to operating, maintaining, and expanding the transportation infrastructure for one of the greatest economies in the world. Assignments include hands-on projects to cultivate technical, writing, communication, and team-building skills. The Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO) is looking for an intern to join their team! Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct benchmarking and perform research and analysis on emerging technologies and strategic issues
  • Develop memos, web applications, and presentation materials to communicate policy and analytical insights to other departments and executive management
  • Provide support to advance the implementation of innovative technologies and practices
  • Support project managers and teammates during the life cycle of pilot projects for successful completion within timeline and budget
  • Support the iHub in planning and executing innovation fairs and other activities

About the Office of the Chief Operating Officer:

The Office of the Chief Operating Officer oversees operations at the Port Authority’s five lines of business: Aviation, PATH, Port, Tunnels, Bridges & Terminals, and the World Trade Center, as well as the Operations Services Department, with the vision of being a world-class operator of world-class facilities. OCOO staff work on the following areas: business performance and innovation; customer experience; excellence in operations, maintenance, and safety across all facilities in the Line Departments; and advancing agency strategic priorities and initiatives.

OCOO also assists in overseeing the Innovation Hub (iHub), which is focused on facilitating a cultural shift in the Agency towards innovation that will improve the operations and better prepare the Agency for the 21st century. The Management Intern will work closely with OCOO staff, iHub working group members, and staff throughout the Agency to develop and implement strategic initiatives through iHub.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must be students enrolled in a graduate program returning to their program during the Fall 2023 semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven, and have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.
  • We welcome applications from a diverse range of majors/minors.
  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research, and applicable technical skills.

Desired Skills

  • Graduate student studying Urban Planning, Architecture, Public Policy, Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration, Political Science, or related area
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in the public sector
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex assignments and to work in a fast-paced team environment on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills
  • Excellent design skills and proficiency in computer simulations, visualizations, and design

Internship Details:

  • The duration is expected to be approximately 12 weeks, starting in the beginning of June 2023
  • This internship will require work 5 days/week at 7.25 hours/day
  • The format is expected to be hybrid, partially in-person and partially virtual
