Elliott Sturtevant, PhD studies the history of architecture, infrastructure, and urbanization in North America since the eighteenth century. His work sits at the intersection of architectural and urban history with histories of technology, business, and the environment.
Elliott received his B.Sc. (Arch.) from McGill University, M.Arch. from the University of Toronto, and Ph.D. from Columbia University. His work has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture, the Wolfsonian–FIU, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Graham Foundation, and the Hagley Museum & Library, among others. Before coming to FIU, Elliott was the 2023–24 Princeton-Mellon Fellow in Architecture, Urbanism, and the Humanities at Princeton University, where he taught an interdisciplinary design studio open to students from across the university.
Elliott’s writing has appeared or is forthcoming in arq, Itinerario, Architectural Theory Review, Thresholds, and Pidgin. From 2014 to 2024, he was also managing editor of the Aggregate Architectural History Collaborative’s online platform, we-aggregate.org. He now serves on the group’s board of directors.
