Hernan Guerrero Applewhite
Adjunct Professor

With 25 years of experience in urban design and urban redevelopment, Hernan has dedicated his career to revitalizing neighborhoods through spatial analysis, planning and design. His diverse portfolio spans residential housing development, business corridor revitalization, historic preservation, master planning, road diets, and the creation of design guidelines.

Working across community-based organizations, government agencies, and private firms has given Hernan a comprehensive understanding of how effective information sharing and meaningful public engagement drive successful development processes. Growing up in Panama, New York City, and Geneva, Switzerland sparked his fascination with how the built environment shapes human experience, bringing a global perspective to local community challenges.

Hernan is passionate about place making and bringing communities back to life through design thinking processes. As an educator, he has taught introductory GIS courses at Long Island University Brooklyn Campus and The New School for Management and Urban Policy, taught dual enrollment programs in Miami-Dade County Public Schools through the University of Florida School of Architecture, and instructed Urban Design electives and Architecture Studios at FIU School of Architecture. Through his combined professional practice and teaching, he continues to advance urban design while mentoring the next generation of designers and planners.
