Who we are?

Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses — one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, and the other in Manhattan. The Fieldston Middle campus located in Riverdale is comprised of approximately 400 students in Grades 6-8th.

The Ethical Culture Fieldston School has a long history of equity and inclusion deeply rooted in our mission and the educational philosophy of our founder, Felix Adler. We are looking for passionate educators to join our community who are committed to progressive education, who consider ethics to be at the core of their work with students and colleagues, and who will contribute to the academic success of all of our students. Currently, we have a parental leave position for a 6th Grade English Teacher.  September 1, 2020 – January 19, 2021. 

The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about a diverse range of young adult literature and writing instruction,  understands how to receive critical feedback and understands how to instruct students with a growth mindset.

Responsibilities include teaching a course load of 4 sections; serving as an advisor to a group of 10-14 students; working as a member of a grade-level interdisciplinary team; attending faculty meetings; and other shared middle school responsibilities.  

Ideal candidates have experience employing a range of pedagogical approaches and will be excited by the opportunity to teach a diverse student body in a values-based community.  The ideal candidate has also demonstrated a commitment to addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside the classroom.  A passion for working with middle school students, a flexible attitude, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a sense of humor are essential.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required,  Masters preferred in English.
  • Experience with and familiarity with young adult literature required.
  • An understanding and commitment to cultural competency and how to support a diverse student population
  • A minimum 5 years of relevant teaching experience, preferably with middle school students.  
  • Proficient with technology, including Smartboards, Google platform, and apps.
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
