This position is shared between two values-aligned non-profits: The Industrial
Commons (TIC) and TOSS Studio (TOSS). TIC has set out to rebuild a diverse
working class based on locally rooted wealth focusing on worker advocacy, ownership,
and sustainability. TOSS seeks to harness the power of creativity to improve the
health and wellbeing of rural communities.
As you might imagine, long term change doesn’t happen overnight. How do you grow
confidence and participation in a shared vision, promoting a better future for all?
Effective change makers use dynamic visualization, participatory tools, and embrace
systems thinking to address the complexities of this moment and help us see the world
we want to build…which is why we lean into the arts. This “Movement Builder” will
develop student and community programming to promote the creative development
of our community and the vision of TOSS and The Industrial Commons. Become a
change-maker and lead us into a new era of collaboration as we develop existing
programs (such as student art initiatives in our public schools, collaborations with
Work in Burke , and public art projects such as Hometown Walkabout or Realidades
del Sur ) and collectively form new initiatives.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
TIC Program Development and Management: Participation, Education (50%)
- Manage and develop industrial art residency programs
- Plan, design, and execute pop-up events, public art projects, community engagement, and fundraising events
TOSS Program Development and Management: Participation, Education (30%)
- Manage and develop community and student art programing
- Maintain community art spaces
Design/Branding/Marketing (5%)
- Actively research industry trends and conduct community needs assessments
- Develop, facilitate, and manage promotional opportunities and presentations in local, regional, and national venues
Organizational Development and Financial Management (15%)
- Participate in quarterly trainings/workshops, quarterly check-ins with managers and Co-Directors, monthly staff meetings, and weekly team meetings
- Set and manage financial systems
- Apply for grants and funds to cover scholarships for need-based students
Skills and Experience Required:
- Must have significant teaching or community organizing experience (a degree, equivalent training, and/or experience in the arts nonprofit sector is a plus)
- Must have excellent, proactive communication and problem-solving skills
- Must develop, communicate, and advance a unique, cohesive visual aesthetic
- Must be able to manage projects to completion
- Must have proficiencies in photoshop, indesign, or illustrator
- 3-5 years of work experience is a plus
- Proficiencies in photography is a plus
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus
Compensation, Benefits and Conditions:
- Salaried position, salary dependent on experience
- Position will start with a 90-day probationary period
- Position will require employee to live in Morganton, NC
- TIC will support upgrades to resources and tools needed to carry out the work
- Mileage will be reimbursed at the current federal rate
- Cell phone reimbursement
- 18 PTO days, 10 Holidays
- 3% cost of living raise annually
