General Purpose: The Assistant Principal Grades K-3 assists the Elementary School Principal in the successful coordination and administration of all programs and activities that are appropriately associated with the elementary school. This includes student academic achievement, student welfare and safety, parent satisfaction, and staff professional development, class scheduling, coordination, and oversight. Additionally, the Assistant Principal Grades K-3 oversees the administration of state and national standardized testing and tracks, analyzes, and reports academic results. The Assistant Principal Grades K-3 oversees the management of the physical curriculum and scheduling of the building and facilities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Instructional Leadership: 

  • Assist in the evaluation of the instructional program in a systematic manner and make recommendations to the Principal.
  • Develop staff instructional techniques through instructional coaching.
  • Assist in the organization of grade level or departmental faculty meetings which are effective in implementing and improving curriculum and instruction.
  • Work to improve classroom instruction, student/teacher rapport, discipline, attitudes and relationships by observation and conferences, and identify specific strengths and weaknesses.
  • Assist the Principal in evaluation of assigned staff members according to Board policy and school procedures; identify and communicate strengths and weaknesses to assigned staff members.
  • Promote a warm, caring and nurturing environment.
  • Create a safe, efficient and effective learning environment.
  • Support all school programs as a means to enhance the students’ overall learning.
  • Maintain visibility throughout the day in halls, classrooms and activities within the elementary buildings.
  • Respect individual differences and opinions, and remain open to suggestions and alternate ideas.
  • Exhibit enthusiasm and school spirit.
  • Support extra-curricular activities and demonstrate interest in student’s lives outside of the school day.
  • Become familiar with and knowledgeable about scope and sequence of elementary and secondary curriculum.
  • Demonstrate an outstanding knowledge of the principles of effective Direct Instruction strategies.
  • Be available to staff as an instructional resource. 

School Management: 

  • Assist the Principal in the general administration of the school and serve as Principal when the Principal is absent.
  • Be familiar with the duties of the Principal, the instructional program and the procedures followed in the assigned school.
  • Confer with the Principal as needed concerning the school’s activities and special programs.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration.
  • Assist the Principal with the planning and organization of assemblies, events, and field trips.
  • Contribute to the preparation of teacher handbooks and student handbooks as required.
  • Assist the Principal in the supervision of conduct within the school and oversight of disciplinary procedures, keeping records of any disciplinary action.
  • Supervise afternoon and evening student activities and parent/staff events as required.
  • Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, according to due process and the rights of students.
  • Supervise the reporting and monitoring of student attendance.
  • Be consistent, fair, and firm with discipline of students.
  • Follow through effectively with discipline and responsibilities.
  • Make decisions that enhance the learning and teaching environment.
  • Confront and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Be organized and able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently and effectively throughout both campuses.

Interpersonal Relationships: 

  • Attend special events held to recognize student achievement, school-sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.
  • Act as liaison between the school and the community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and encouraging community participation in school life.
  • Assist Principal with support service personnel in organizing and conducting effective maintenance, custodial, food service and other necessary support service programs, and make recommendations for alternations and improvements in those areas.
  • Build rapport and establishes a level of open communication with students, teachers and parents.
  • Be responsive to staff and parent concerns.
  • Treat people fairly, equitably and with dignity and respect.
  • Be flexible, adaptable and approachable.

 

Professional Responsibilities: 

  • Assure administrative representation at all meetings of parent support groups of the local school.
  • Perform other duties as dictated by law or assigned by the Principal.
  • Serve on committees as requested.
  • Be positive, committed and supportive of the mission of the school.
  • Understand and support the beliefs and practices of the building principles and cultures.
  • Respond to inquiries as soon as possible, but not longer than 48 hours, while on vacation or leaves of extended time periods.
  • Develop a list of duties to be covered while out on vacation or a leave of an extended time period.

Other Duties and Responsibilities: As needed or assigned.

 

Minimum Requirements:  

Have as a minimum a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.

Experience: 

  • Have demonstrated two years of satisfactory teaching, administrative, or supervisory experience.

Salary Range:

$62,000-$72,000 per year (commensurate with experience).
