Position Summary
The Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, located in Maitland, FL, treats and rehabilitates approximately 700 birds of prey annually. The Center for Birds of Prey also acts as the Main Office location for Audubon Florida’s EagleWatch and Conservation Leadership Initiative programs. The Conservation Leadership Initiative is a co-mentorship program that connects college students of diverse backgrounds to Audubon leaders, conservation projects, and professional development opportunities within the Audubon Florida network. This program aims to bridge the gap between our current Audubon leaders and the next generation of young conservationists in Florida. The program also has a large interest in introducing people of underrepresented communities to the Audubon network. In October of 2022, Audubon Florida will bring together its next CLI Cohort for the year-long program.
This paid internship will last 4 months, approximately 20 hours per week. The internship will begin in July and end in November. Exact start dates are flexible. The position is based out of the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, FL, but will offer some opportunities to work from home as well.
The CLI Intern will gain:
- A greater understanding of the structure of Audubon and its local chapters
- Experience in planning and hosting an in-person conference event
- Program development and coordination skills
- The ability to identify and reduce barriers to participation in environmental programs
- Skills in outreach and communication strategies in order to reach multiple audiences
Essential Functions
- Build relationships with contacts at colleges and universities across the state of Florida for CLI program recruitment, with a focus on HBCUs and MSIs.
- Support the CLI Program Associate in planning upcoming events such as the 2022 CLI Cohort onboarding at the Audubon Assembly.
- Assist with Center outreach initiatives including in-person and online special events.
- Provide support to the Education Manager for education projects.
- Support the daily operation of the Center for Birds of Prey, which could include responsibilities such as Guest Relations, education and outreach, or animal husbandry.
- Other duties as needed and assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Coursework in an environmental field or related.
- An interest in environmental issues, birds, and wildlife.
- Experience planning events is preferred.
- Experience working with or leading college groups or clubs is preferred.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in environmental conservation.
- A self-starter, one who is motivated, able to work both independently and with a team.
- People from BIPOC or other underrepresented communities in the conservation field are strongly encouraged to apply.
