The Smithsonian’s social media team in the Office of Public Affairs seeks a collaborative, creative, and detail-oriented Social Media Specialist. Reporting to the Social Media Strategist, the Social Media Specialist will contribute to social media content production, coordination, reporting, and customer service. They will engage audiences to expand knowledge of the Smithsonian Institution and gain support for its mission and programs.
The central Smithsonian social media team is responsible for managing the flagship @Smithsonian social media accounts and coordinating collaboration and campaigns that connect topics across the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. The team leverages social media metrics and audience response to bring the Smithsonian’s stories, collections, and expertise to a large nationwide audience, highlighting the Smithsonian’s relevance in a competitive, fast-moving landscape.
Key qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years developing digital content, with experience in social media, preferably in the fields of education, culture, or within mission-based organizations. Candidates should possess strong research and writing skills, experience coordinating content review processes, and a knowledge of tactics to ensure factual accuracy. The ideal candidate will have an interest in following social media trends and evolving audience demographics as well as a passion for sharing stories on a wide range of topics that resonate and spark engagement.
Candidates must have demonstrated competence as part of their overall work history in navigating complex topics and consulting multiple sources to craft and proofread accurate, high quality, sensitive, and accessible copy in line with brand standards.
This position includes occasional pre-scheduled weekend and evening work. It requires occasional pre-scheduled on-site work in Washington, D.C., to assist with social media coverage of exhibition openings or other Smithsonian events. This job is telework accessible and not a remote position.
This is a one-year term non-Federal Trust Fund position with a starting salary of $61,947.
