This is a paid summer position at a full-schedule, residential arts program!

*We enthusiastically invite people from historically marginalized communities, such as BIPOC, LGBTQ folx, and people with disabilities, to apply for all positions at every level of staff experience in the summer.*

Buck’s Rock Camp is hiring a wide variety of Camp Counselors for its upcoming season in 2023. Camp Counselors arrive in late June, a week before campers, and reside on-site through late August. They spend the two months while camp is in session working with kids and teens ages 10-17. Camp Counselors live and work in a thriving community of nearly 500 artists of all ages and from all walks of life.

Specifically, Buck’s Rock is hiring Woodworking Counselors. Woodworking counselors work closely with fellow staff and campers as dedicated design/arts instructors. They typically work during open shop hours every day from 9 AM to 6 PM, with one hour off per day (in addition to two hours off midday for lunch and rest hour), and one day off per 7-day week. They are lodged on-camp, a short walking distance away from all amenities, in bunks with up to 3 other staff members. Their responsibilities and daily routines include…

  • Teaching kids and teens (ages 10-17) how to safely use all machines in a fully equipped, professional-grade woodworking shop, and guiding them through each step of the woodworking process from design to finishing
  • Helping to maintain the Wood shop facilities, equipment and materials
  • Working with fellow Wood shop staff (typically a team of 2 under the direction of a Head of Shop) to establish individualized, Montessori-style workshops and lessons with easy points of access for young learners
  • Collaborating with dozens of other instructional staff working in a variety of disciplines across Buck’s Rock’s 30+ shops, spanning both creative/visual and performing arts
  • Engaging in inspiring cultural exchange with dozens of international staff
  • Cultivating feelings of joy, belonging, and purpose in young artistic minds!

Ideally, qualified applicants…

  • Observe a personal or professional studio art practice at home or at school
  • Are in a dedicated and relevant concentration of study or field of work
  • Have at least six (6) credits worth of study in a related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • Have meaningful experience teaching their art or craft to teenage learners – or are hoping for more experience in that regard
  • Work well in collaboration with others, and can thrive in a community of some 500 resident artists, counselors, coordinators, and support staff
  • Have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice

(NOTE: The salary for this position ranges from $2,500-$5,000 per summer, based on prior experience and specific role within the shop)
