This is a paid summer position at a full-schedule, 501(c)(3) non-profit residential arts program!

*We enthusiastically invite people from historically marginalized communities, such as BIPOC, LGBTQ folx, and people with disabilities, to apply for all positions at every level of staff experience in the summer.*

Buck’s Rock Camp is hiring a wide variety of Camp Counselors for its upcoming season in 2023. Counselors arrive in late June, a week before campers, and reside on-site through late August. They spend these two months working with kids and teens ages 10-17, while immersed in a thriving community of nearly 500 artists of all ages and from all walks of life and enjoying access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for the furthering of their own art practice . “Revolutionary” and “life-changing” are some of the words that our alumni have used to describe this unique experience.

In particular, Buck’s Rock is seeking staff for its Lighting Design shop. Lighting counselors work closely with fellow staff and campers as dedicated arts instructors within their respective shop, as well as providing on-site support for campwide performances. Typically, these staff members work every day during primary shop hours from 9 AM to 6 PM, with one hour off per day (in addition to two hours off midday for lunch and rest hour), and one day off per 7-day week. This schedule is flexible, however, and fluctuates based on the schedule of performances and shows particular to each summer. Because these often fall outside of primary shop hours, LSD counselors can expect to work between 6 PM and midnight at least twice/week, and later than that at least once per week. They are lodged on-camp, a short walking distance away from all amenities, in bunks with up to 3 other staff members. Their responsibilities and daily routines include…

  • Under the direction of the Head of Shop, working with Performing Arts shop staff (e.g. Theatre, Dance, Clown, etc.), Stage Manager(s), Production Manager(s), and fellow shop staff to design lighting for 1-3 shows per summer, and assisting with lighting on other shows as needed
  • Instructing and mentoring campers on lighting best practices and techniques for design and electrical work, as well as the inner workings of the equipment
  •  Installing lighting equipment
  • Running the lighting console for shows, or assisting interested campers in doing so
  • Running cable to power fixtures
  • Helping to maintain Lighting shop facilities, equipment, and materials
  • Reading through scripts and devising designs and design paperwork as necessary
  • Collaborating with dozens of other instructional staff working in a variety of disciplines across Buck’s Rock’s 30+ shops, spanning both creative/visual and performing arts
  • Cultivating feelings of joy, belonging, and purpose in young creative minds!

Ideally, qualified applicants…

  • Observe a personal or professional lighting design practice at home or at school
  • Have at least six (6) credits worth of study in a related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • Have meaningful experience teaching their craft to teenage learners – or are hoping for more experience in that regard
  • Work well in collaboration with others, and can thrive in a busy communal living environment
  • Are comfortable spending long periods of time in the heat, as summers in the Housatonic Valley can be very hot and most camp facilities lack air-conditioning
  • Have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice

Consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO), and The Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act (CFEPA), it is the policy of Buck’s Rock Camp to provide reasonable accommodation when requested by a qualified applicant or employee with a disability, unless such accommodation would cause an undue hardship. The policy regarding requests for reasonable accommodation applies to all aspects of employment, including the application process. If reasonable accommodation is needed, please contact us today at hiring@bucksrockcamp.org, by telephone at (860) 354-5030, or by mail at 59 Buck’s Rock Rd, New Milford, CT 06776
