Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to producing innovative theatre of the highest quality by American and international playwrights, with a focus on presenting New York, American, and world premieres, invites individuals to apply for the Paul A. Kaplan Theatre Management Program full-time 2023-24 Early Career Professional Training track’s Artistic Traineeship. For 50 years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by contemporary American and international playwrights. MTC is an anti-racist organization that respects and honors all voices, and upholds the values of community and equity.

The Paul A. Kaplan Theatre Management Program provides a unique opportunity to learn about producing not-for-profit theatre both on and off-Broadway through intensive on-the-job training. Trainees are assigned projects and responsibilities that contribute to the day-to-day running of the company. Additionally, trainees’ relationships with their supervisor and mentor ensure that they are not only gaining valuable skills but also receiving continuous support and feedback. The training experience is further enhanced by an educational seminar series led by the industry experts on MTC’s staff as well as career development coaching with our human resources team.

The Artistic Office is the hub of all artistic, and much administrative, activity at Manhattan Theatre Club.

The Artistic traineeship is an administrative position focusing on the work that takes place in MTC’s Artistic office to make our productions possible. The Artistic Trainee plays an important role as a member of the artistic team, providing highly attentive and proactive administrative support to the Artistic Director, Director of Artistic Operations and Communication, Artistic Producer, Director of Artistic Producing, Assistant to the Artistic Director / Artistic Associate and Artistic Office Assistant. While there is no set daily routine, these tasks regularly include, but are not limited to, phone and email correspondence, scheduling, research projects, and errands.

The Artistic traineeship provides a unique opportunity to be exposed to every aspect of how MTC’s Artistic Office operates. The trainee will observe all aspects of the artistic producing of our shows; producing the content for our special events; staff interactions with the press, audiences, and donors; activity related to programming upcoming seasons; and much more. This role is ideal for someone who is looking for a broad understanding of how a major institutional theatre works, while gaining specific administrative experience related to the day-to-day activities of an Artistic office.

Strong written and oral communication, telephone, organizational, writing, and active listening skills are required. Attention to detail is essential, as is a good attitude and an ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Ideally, a successful candidate would have some previous administrative experience and some familiarity with the New York theatre landscape. The best candidates will be excited to be a part of making MTC’s work possible and will be happy to join a fast-moving and much-experienced artistic team.

Previous Artistic early career training participants have gone on to artistic staff and leadership positions at other NYC non-profits and regional theatres, freelance directing careers, and positions in other areas of the industry.

This position is full-time, 34 hours/week, and begins in-person on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. The program concludes on Friday, May 24, 2024. Standard hours will be Mondays through Thursdays from 10am-6pm (with a 30-minute unpaid meal break) and Fridays from 10am-2pm. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
