Bachelor of Arts in Art

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art program offers a wide range of experiences in studio art, including technical and formal concerns, experimental and conceptual development, while also allowing concentration in a focused area of study or exploration of other academic disciplines within the University. The BA in Art establishes the foundation towards an artistic career. It qualifies for advancement to graduate education such as MFA in Visual Arts, MAT or MS in Art Education, and MA in Arts Administration.

Academic Standards

Students must complete the five foundation courses (15 credits) with a minimum GPA of 2.50 or greater in two attempts or fewer. These courses include ART1201C, ART1203C, ART2300C, ART2608C and ART3820 .

Drops after the add/drop period, which result in a DR grade, are considered an attempt in the course and count as an unsuccessful enrollment. Students who do not satisfy this requirement will be advised to change major to other degrees such as ARTHST:BA or INTSTUD:BA.


BA in Art: Creative Industries | Flexible & Comprehensive Degree Structure

The Bachelor of Arts in Art provides a strong foundation in studio art while allowing you to tailor your education to your interests and career goals. Core courses in drawing, design, and art history build essential technical skills and a deep understanding of artistic traditions and contemporary practices. As you progress, you’ll explore creative disciplines from painting and sculpture to digital media, animation, and photography. The program also encourages interdisciplinary study, letting you pair art with other fields. Whether you’re interested in psychology for art therapy, biology for scientific illustration, or marketing for branding and design, you can shape your degree to fit your ambitions.

You’ll take specialized courses in the Creative Industries, gaining insight into marketing, exhibition design, curatorial practices, and professional writing. Hands-on experience is available through internships, fieldwork, and projects with Miami’s arts community, offering real-world engagement for those who pursue these opportunities. The degree culminates in a capstone course, where you’ll build a professional portfolio, preparing you to enter the workforce. With structure and flexibility, this program equips you with the skills, experience, and interdisciplinary knowledge for a rewarding career in creative industries, museums, arts nonprofits, and cultural institutions.
