Rhea Leonard is an African American multidisciplinary artist that uses drawing, printmaking and sculpture within her practice to explore the Black body as well as complex emotions and situations relating to experiences of Black life in America. By focusing on the Black body, language and the viewer, and the broader Black community, she works to highlight the ever-present aspects that come with the pervasive, nuanced levels of racism, anti-blackness and microaggressions present in today’s American society. Her work is part of the Betty Laird Perry Collection at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum. Leonard has given artist lectures and taken part in panel discussions with local institutions such as the Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum (2023), Green Space Miami (2022), The Frank Art Gallery (2022), Perez Art Museum Miami (2020),The Wolfsonian-FIU (2020) and Miami Beach Urban Studios (2019). She has received artist grants and awards such as the Miami Individual Artists Stipend from Miami Dade County (2022), Green Space Miami Initiative Grant (2020), as well as the Betty Laird Perry Award (2018). Her artwork has been published in the New York Times, Miami Herald, The Miami Times and magazines. Leonard is also an adjunct professor at New World School of the Arts where she teaches Printmaking. She has attended art residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts and at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. She is currently a resident artist locally at The Bakehouse Art Complex.
