Dear CARTA Family,

Today, we celebrate another historic moment within our College.

I am excited to share that Mr. and Mrs. Lee Caplin have donated $10 million in support of our Department of Journalism + Media. This is one of the largest donations to a journalism and media program in the Florida State University System (SUS). In recognition, I am proud to announce we will be establishing the FIU Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media.

The Caplins have continuously showed their commitment to providing access to excellence and techquity, and this gift further supports their vision. In previous years, they donated $1.2 million to CARTA, creating the Lee Caplin Immersive Studio for Altered Reality (iSTAR). The newly established Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media will further enhance our efforts as a college and a university to support diversity, inclusivity, and equitable access to emerging and immersive technologies, preparing career-ready, multilingual professionals.

We are humbled by and thankful for this revolutionary gift, and we make the following promises to our students and the diverse communities we serve:

  • Enhancements to the curriculum, faculty, and professional staff to ensure graduates are prepared for interdisciplinary, high-demand professions in the fields of journalism, immersive and interactive digital media, and film
  • Strengthening of the award-winning multilingual South Florida Media Network, the school’s flagship outlet providing opportunities to learn and innovate in a full-immersion professional learning environment that produces news, information and community engagement, with news bureaus in Miami and Washington, D.C.
  • Engaging, inclusive, content-producing coursework that supports an experiential “learn by doing” teaching philosophy and provides skill sets to combat misinformation and disinformation
  • A diverse, dedicated, innovative, and acclaimed faculty of practitioners and scholars
  • Instruction in the use of industry standard equipment, software, and the latest immersive and emerging technologies
  • Capital improvements to facilities and equipment to support signature learning spaces and state-of-the-art equipment and materials
  • Student scholarships and financial assistance

Please join in my congratulating our phenomenal Journalism & Media students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Your commitment to excellence led to this gift. Your expertise, drive, and professionalism have shaped — and will continue to shape — the future of journalism, media, and our FIU!
