COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION, ARCHITECTURE + THE ARTS

Dear Students, Colleagues, Alumni, Board Members, and Friends,

As we complete our initial month of learning and working remotely, all of us have had to quickly adapt to new routines, adjust to new personal and professional norms, and wrestle with the increasing anxieties of a still uncertain future.

Throughout these challenges, I’m personally comforted by the core messages of Passover, Easter, and Ramadan (all observed this month) and their powerful reminders of the importance of self-reflection, empathy for others, and hope for the future.

I hope as you read this week’s newsletter and the various activities of the College’s students, faculty, and staff, you, too, will be inspired by their untiring leadership, moving selflessness, and enterprising drive.

In the Spirit of the Blue + Gold,

Brian Schriner
Dean

Below are some images of healthcare workers from Baptist Health South Florida showing gratitude for the face shields produced in collaboration with CARTA’s Miami Beach Urban Studios and FIU College of Engineering and Computing. We are humbled by their service!

The second batch of face shields is currently in production.

CDC TIPS FOR HEALTH & SAFETY

Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others.

  • You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick.
  • Everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they have to go out in public, for example to the grocery store or to pick up other necessities.
  • The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected.
  • Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker.
  • Continue to keep about six feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.

CARTA IN THE NEWS

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HASN’T STOPPED THE FIRST COHORT OF STUDENT JOURNALISTS FROM
UNIVISION’S STEP PROGRAM FROM GETTING THE INSIDE SCOOP

While reporting from home has been a new experience for many reporters and student journalists alike, program instructor Dianne Fernandez believes her students have been able to hold their own and prevail despite the unprecedented circumstances.

“The program and our students have had to make big adjustments as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak,” says Fernandez. “The students have really risen to the occasion and are getting more hands-on experience as Univision newsrooms across the country cover the biggest story of our time. I’m thrilled with their efforts in time of flux and crisis.”

IN THE WAKE OF COVID-19, FIU THEATRE SAYS, THE CLASS MUST GO ON

The Department of Theatre is going behind the scenes and showing the university community how they stay motivated while working remotely with their all-new video blog (vlog) series, The Class Must Go On.

“Our vlogs are meant to help students feel like they’re not alone while going through this transition to remote learning,” says Umana, the vlog’s host and editor. “It’s a drastic change, especially for many classes that rely on that human connection and physical contact but we are encouraging our community to continue working and making it happen. It also provides an inside look for those not in our community of all of the work that goes into our craft.”

SEVEN TIPS TO PRESENT YOURSELF ON ZOOM

Dozens of FIU faculty and staff have been able to transition remotely with the help of our trusty sidekick, Zoom. And while we may not be able to control whether our cat jumps on our laptops or our dogs scratch at the door waiting to be let in, there are a few things we can control to present ourselves in the best possible light – one being our backgrounds.

ASK TONY MARTINEZ: LA AGENT GIVES THEATRE STUDENTS ADVICE

“If you’re making the move west, I would suggest you take time to get settled on both a personal and professional level. That means finding a place to live you can afford and buying a reliable car that will serve as your second home. Once that’s done, get out there and explore! Go see where all the major studios are located. Learn how the streets and freeways work. Figure out what makes West Hollywood different from North Hollywood. Doing this will make LA feel like a home. And that’s important because you need to be settled before you start pursuing your career.”

CARTA DISCIPLINES COMBINE FORCES FOR 2019-2020 THEATRE SEASON PUBLICITY

Three CARTA disciplines – art + art history, communication and theatre – teamed up to promote the 2019-20 theatre season. The Department of Theatre at FIU’s College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts produces four to five shows per year, completely designed, performed and built by theatre students and faculty. In an effort to provide more experiential learning opportunities, the Department of Theatre has recently begun collaborating with students from different CARTA disciplines to help with the promotion and publicity for each theatre production.
