COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT JOINS FIU IN DC’S TALENT LAB

School of Communication and Journalism’s Washington, D.C. – based interns are getting a more robust experience through seminars, networking events, and tours offered by FIU in DC’s The Talent Lab– a semester-long program that enhances students’ DC experience. As part of the Lab, the Communication Department will train DC interns in the basics of workplace communication–essential for students suddenly immersed in a fast-paced professional work environment.

A recent Talent Lab evening session (with pizza!) on business communication included SCJ Interns Madalyn Medrano, the Latin America Program intern at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; Juan Salgado, FIU in DC’s communications intern; and Alexis Woodyard, who just landed a job at U.S. News and World Report following her internship in the South Florida News Service’s Washington Bureau. Also in attendance were Belen Sassone, FIU Congressional Intern  and Patricia Guadalupe, DC News Bureau professor.  Participants responded to several scenarios and crafted appropriate messaging. The students’ work was then displayed on FIU in DC’s flat screen wall for group feedback.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN IIDA’S DESIGN MIX 2019

The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) South  Florida Chapter recently hosted its 19th annual Design Mix event. Students and faculty members from FIU’s Department of Interior Architecture embraced their inner circus character and participated in “Peculiarium: Design’s Greatest Show!”.

This year’s theme flashed back to the vintage circus era dating back to the 1700’s and featured entertainment such as clowns, jugglers, acrobats and more.

IIDA’s Design Mix is a fundraising gala that has become a favorite event throughout the years amongst students and the design community alike.  The event pairs designers and product manufacturers in a challenge to utilize the manufacturer’s product in the design of clothing outfit. This year, the imaginative creations were exhibited at a gala fashion show event held at the Miami Scottish Rite on Saturday, March 30th

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Miami native, Amanda Pertierra is a tiny girl with an enormous amount of talent. Pertierra, an avid lover of Disney, Harry Potter, and Star Wars, is currently costume designing The Suicide. We were able to sit down with her in between costume fittings to get to know her better and what she was most excited about for the upcoming show.

1. What got you into costume designing?

I started doing theatre in middle school and it was a lot of fun. At first I wanted to do acting, but when I got to high school I wanted to try costuming for competitions. I kept doing really well and I loved drawing my renderings. And then I kept getting awards at competitions so I thought, “Hey! I’m pretty good at this,” and just kept going with that.

Born and raised in South Florida, Teddy Ramon is a girl “who speaks softly and carries a big stick.” Ramon, who loves architecture, history, and playwriting, is currently Prop Master for The Suicide. We were able to talk to her during crunch time to get to know her better and what she was most excited about for the upcoming show.

1. What makes you laugh?

Oh, a lot of things. My boyfriend, Kevin (sound designer for The Suicide). History jokes. The Office is my type of comedy. A lot of professors say my type of comedy is uncomfortable humor. I love friendship humor too. Like Hot Tub Time Machine. I love friends having fun together.

SCJ STUDENT EARNS A PLACE IN AAF’s MOST PROMISING MULTICULTURAL STUDENT PROGRAM

The American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Multicultural Students program connects the advertising industry with the nation’s top multicultural college seniors. This year Abraham Escalona was the first FIU student to be accepted into the program. The program not only honors the students, but enhances their knowledge and understanding of the advertising industry by offering networking, interviewing and industry immersion opportunities with advertising professionals, marketing and media professionals.

“As a 28-year-old immigrant from Venezuela and a huge advertising nerd, it is an incredible honor to be selected as one of the American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Multicultural Students (MPMS). Becoming the first in FIU’s history makes it truly indescribable. A Panther victory I will carry with me long after graduating with a B.S. in Communications, Advertising. My mentor, FIU Professor Albena Petrus, deserves all the credit in the world. I am blessed and humbled she saw something in me, decided to mentor me, and recommended me for the MPMS.
