JOIN US APRIL 4th FOR: WOMEN IN COMMUNICATION: SHATTERING THE CEILING

The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at FIU’s School of Communication + Journalism invites you to attend the Fourth Annual Conference, “Women in Communication: Shattering the Ceiling.”  This national one-day conference on April 4, 2019, brings together outstanding women professionals from around the country to discuss and analyze a broad range of topics focused on the theme of “Shattering the Ceiling” – How do we promote gender equality in the field of communication?”

Conference participants explore the role of women in leadership positions in the fields of advertising, broadcasting, digital media, newspapers, public relations and magazines.  This open conversation brings together women from across the country to talk about today’s important issues.

Are communication professionals achieving their potential? Findings from a national survey conducted by the Kopenhaver Center reveal that women in communication professions are three times less likely than men in the same professions to hold a top management position; men dominated the highest salary brackets; women are more likely than men to feel they’ve been bypassed for a better, higher position because of their gender and/or because of their race or ethnicity, and that women had worked fewer years than men in their professional fields partly because they are more likely than men to have experienced a career interruption. The question is, what do we need to do to break the barriers?

MUFI RELEASES REPORT: MIAMI’S HOUSING AFFORDABILITY CRISIS

The Miami Urban Future Initiative (MUFI)– a joint effort between the Creative Class Group and the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA), housed in the Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS) and funded by The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation– has released a new report on Miami’s Housing Affordability Crisis.

Miami’s downtown skyline is dotted with construction cranes, as endless new condos and apartments are built throughout the city. But the new construction is misleading: Greater Miami—the tri-county metropolitan region spanning Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties—faces a severe crisis of housing unaffordability that stems from the dual problem of high housing costs and low wages.

In fact, the Greater Miami ranks as the seventh least-affordable large metro (with more than 5 million people) in the world, trailing only Hong Kong, Sydney, Los Angeles, London and its suburbs, and Toronto and ranking one place above New York. The region’s housing affordability crisis reinforces its high level of income inequality. The Miami metro, consisting of cities in Miami- Dade County, ranked as the nation’s most unequal metro in 2016.
