Continuing the tradition of excellence established in the past years, CARTA’s Indoor Percussion at Florida International University competed in local and national competitions with four ensembles this year: Percussion, Winds, FIU Gold, and WinterGuard. FIU THEATRE’S SUMMER CAMP GIVES STUDENTS A CHANCE TO EXPLORE THEIR CREATIVE SIDE

FIU Theatre’s Summer Camp is back again this year from July 15-July 26 at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center.  This year, camp runs for two weeks and gives children ages 6-12 the opportunity to explore their creative side, develop valuable social skills, and boost their confidence.

Mornings start off with campers participating in theatre classes focusing on various theatre aspects such as improvisation and movement. Afternoons are spent putting everything they learned together to create their original, self-written play which they will present to family and friends in a final showcase.

During the two weeks, campers also go on field trips around the FIU campus. Some of the field trips include a backstage tour of the Wertheim Performing Arts Center, the Frost Art Museum, and the famous Wall of Wind. Campers will even be able to experience a free art workshop through Pérez Art Museum Miami’s, PAMM in the Neighborhood community outreach program.

AMPARO IMMERSES AUDIENCES IN 1957 CUBA – FEATURING THE WORK OF 8 FIU ALUMNI

It’s New Year’s Eve 1957 and you walk into a rocking Club Náutico in Varadero, Cuba. A server hands you a drink as you join the crowded dance floor, moving to the irresistible sounds of the live band. Suddenly, the revelry is interrupted by whispers spreading throughout the club – Fidel Castro’s revolutionaries are in the mountains and everything is about to change.

AMPARO, an immersive theatrical experience which officially opened last week in Miami, takes you back in time over 60 years ago and puts you right in the center of the action as the Cuban Revolution shakes the island.

AMPARO tells the story of the Arrechabala family, founders of Havana Club Rum, whose company was seized at gunpoint by Cuban revolutionaries. The story, written by Vanessa Garcia, is told in an immersive and interactive style, where the audience is constantly on the move and the story unfolds around them.

MEMORIALIZED BY GRANDDAUGHTERS

Luis Castany never felt more at home than when he was enjoying the arts. A patron of FIU Theatre for over 25 years, he saw countless plays and witnessed the growth of the department.

When he passed away late last year, his granddaughters Brigitte Madan and Monique Urrutia decided to commemorate his life with a plaque on a seat in the Mainstage theatre of the Wertheim Performing Arts Center.

“It’s a way to feel closer to our abuelo,” Madan says. “It does feel like he is with us when we come. He has a seat for himself even though he’s not there with us anymore.”

Some of Madan and Urrutia’s fondest memories of their grandfather took place here at FIU. When they were little girls, living less than a mile from campus, Castany would bring them to campus to see exhibits, hear the symphony, or catch a play.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

7 QUESTIONS WITH NATALIA “QR” QUINTERO-RIESTRA

On May 1, Natalia Quintero-Riestra (“QR”) will walk across the stage, shake President Rosenberg’s hand, and officially graduate with a BFA in Acting from FIU Theatre. She leaves on a high note, having written and performed a wildly successful senior project on Victoria Woodhull and now taking the stage as Masha in The Suicide, her final performance at FIU. Next up, she’ll be heading to San Diego to earn her MFA at UCSD, one of the top acting grad schools in the country. As we close out the semester, we thought it only right to turn the tables on our marketing assistant and get to know her better with 7 Questions.

1. What do you geek out about?

Oh, a lot of things. I love Parks & Recreation. And astrology! Oh my God, I geek out so much about astrology. What else? Food Network shows. My friends. And definitely naps! I’m so tired all the time, I love my naps.
