WERTHEIMS MAKE $10M NAMING GIFT TO FIU SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN SUPPORT OF PERFORMING ARTS

Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim have announced a $10 million naming gift to the FIU School of Music, part of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA). The gift, which will establish several new programs that will elevate the school’s global distinction and identity, is the largest ever made to a music school in the State University System of Florida.

“This gift expresses our continuing passion for and commitment to FIU, our extraordinary hometown university  and the importance of the performing arts, an essential aspect of quality of life,” Dr. Wertheim said. “This gift to support FIU’s dynamic performing arts programs will leverage previous investments we have made in health and business, resulting in enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration between areas and impacts that will benefit our students and community.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

KATHERINE WONG – PATHERNOW WRITER AND FIU RADIO HOST

Why did you choose your major?
I chose my major because of my teacher in the 9th grade. He had us watch a 3-part documentary called “Inside North Korea”, where Vice founder, Shane Smith, documents his journey after a year and a half of trying to get into the country. I had never seen someone report on North Korea, let alone any type of reporting to that nature, and I had a gut feeling that I absolutely had to be a part of the action. Something clicked in my brain – I just knew that I wanted to be the first person to break the story out, no matter what it was.

FIU ARCHITECTURE STUDENT HUNTER REGO WALKS ON WATER

On November 7th, FIU Architecture hosted its 30th Annual ‘Walk on Water’ (WOW) event which brings together students enrolled in Professor Jaime Canaves’ “Materials & Methods of Construction” class to compete in a uniquely styled race in which participants work in teams to create ‘shoes’ that can ‘walk’ across the FIU Green Lake. Participants race across the water for a chance of winning $1000 for first place with an additional $1000 awarded to anyone who beats the previous record of 1:01.

CARTA News followed second year Architecture student, Hunter Rego, who took part in the event for the first time (students are able to compete more than once), and learned about his experience “walking on water”.

7 QUESTIONS WITH THEATRE MAJOR KENDALL VEGA

For anyone who has no idea what happens backstage during a play, how would you describe what a Stage Manager does?

During tech when all the cues are added, all the designers are like “here’s our vision” and then I consider it my duty to keep the integrity of the show of what they want to see and make sure the audience is seeing their vision. I’m calling cues to make that happen, making sure all the set pieces are moving in the way they wanted to and making sure the actors are keeping the blocking with the language the playwright intended. Everything’s happening cohesively.
