CARTA’s Miami Urban Future Initiative (CARTA | MUFI) welcomes the inaugural cohort of research fellows. The goal of the program, housed in the multi-disciplinary College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, is to help the region fill an existing research gap in economic, entrepreneurial, creative, and technological assets in the Greater Miami region.

As Miami’s innovation economy continues to expand and becomes a hub for entrepreneurial opportunities it’s imperative that we incorporate the community in this process,” said Brian Schriner, dean of the College of Communication + The Arts. These fellows joining the inaugural cohort will bring a fresh perspective to this considerable innovation network.”

FIU LAEUD Graduate Design Studio visits Toledo, Ohio

Students from Professor TJ Marston’s Spring Landscape Architecture Graduate Design 4 Studio visited their site in Toledo, Ohio this past weekend. Local members of the design community from the Toledo Design CenterToledo Warehouse District AssociationThe Collaborative Inc.ConnectToledo and Midstory took time out of their weekend to speak with the students, tour through the warehouse district and discuss design ideas.

The visit culminated in a six-hour design charette where students developed conceptual strategies aimed at utilizing public space as a catalyst for revitalizing the Toledo Warehouse District in a collaborative design environment. Congratulations to Lori L. Tharps, Kopenhaver Center Fellow

In 2018, she wrote with Olympic fencer, Ibtihaj Muhammad, and it came out to great reviews.   She also launched a biweekly podcast, My American Meltingpot. The podcast provides a mix of stories about pop culture, parenting and identity politics, all from a multicultural perspective.

Lori L. Tharps is a content creator whose work lands at the intersection of race and popular culture. A public intellectual, Tharps strives to use her words to broaden the conversation about race in America; to challenge racial stereotypes; to dismantle white supremacy; and to celebrate ethnic and cultural diversity whenever possible.

An associate professor of journalism at Temple University, Tharps is also an award-winning author and a mother of three. Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she now makes her home in Philadelphia.

SCJ Alumni Share Experiences & Insight with Students During Panther Alumni Week 2019

During the week of February 4-8, 2019, FIU graduates from the School of Communication + Journalism came back to both MMC and BBC campuses to participate in Panther Alumni Week.

Panther Alumni Week (PAW) is FIU’s annual alumni week of service, during which alumni are invited to return as guest speakers to inspire our students and share career advice. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions to alumni and learn from their experiences through class presentations, industry panels and networking events to promote the building of relationships, which leads to networking, internships, mentoring and career opportunities.

FIU SCJ welcomed alumni from different graduating majors and career fields. Some of the professionals who spoke in undergraduate and graduate class sessions and panels were communications professionals such as Joey Malpica from KAYAK; Roshanna Gosoff and Gabriela Lambertus from Wells Fargo; Katherine Pereda from BLF Communications; speaker, consultant and marketer, Luly Carreras; and Julieta Suarez from Llorente & Cuenca.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Born in Turks and Caicos, Apriah Williams has come from a tiny island to make a big name for herself at Florida International University as the winner of the 2018 Collegiate National Scenic Design Award presented by the Kennedy Center. Williams, a senior, is currently set designing Boeing Boeing, her final show at FIU Theatre. I was able to sit down with her during Boeing Boeing crunch time to get to know her better and what she was most excited about for the upcoming show.

1. What do you find funny?

Tyler Correa (Prop Master for the show), miniature furniture, things that are out of place, things that go wrong. Spongebob too! I remember when I first came to college, I didn’t have a TV so I would go on Youtube and watch Spongebob for hours. I don’t know. I laugh at life. Life is funny.

2. What is your dream project?

I would be able to die if I were to design a set for one of Rihanna’s concert. Even if it’s just a chair on stage. My life would be so complete. Also, baking a really good, big cake. Like Great British Baking Show. Like Tim Burton theme cake. That’s also design.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Exceptional Alumni: Working for a Super Bowl Ad Agency

Name: George Quiroz

Degree Earned: Major – B.S., Advertising, Minor – Psychology
Where do you work? DAVID The Agency (where the 3 of 2019’s biggest Super Bowl ads were created)

How has FIU Helped you get to where you are today in your career? I learned a lot about the advertising industry through my higher level course work and professors. Both gained me visibility into the field and piqued my interest to delve deeper into where I eventually found my career calling.

What path did you take to attain your current career? I began blasting my resume to every advertising agency in south Florida while I was still in college. I got just one call back from a recruiter, but they asked me to reach back out when I was done with school. Before we ended the call, I told the recruiter that not only would I call them then, but that I would get the job when we spoke again. I did, and I did.

Miami Forever? Urbanism in the Anthropocene Back Loop

Tuesday, February 19
6:30 pm

Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS)
420 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, FL

A talk with Stephanie Wakefield:

Drawing from resilience ecology, in this talk Wakefield will propose that we are entering the Anthropocene’s ‘back loop,’ a time of release, fragmentation, and reorientation in which not only populations and climates are being upended but also physical and metaphysical grounds. She takes up these questions via research on what she calls ‘back loop urbanism’ here in Miami, Florida, where a variety of local, in situ, experimental urban resilience efforts are underway. Interested in how they are drawn together as an ‘assemblage’ of back loop urbanism, in which the city itself —its forms of life, self-conception, and material composition— is being reimagined and redesigned, she asks “What tools might such experiments offer, and what tools are needed, for living in Miami’s aqua-urban future?”
