GSC SPEAKER SERIES: AR & VR FUTURIST CATHY HACKL

The Global Strategic Communications (GSC) graduate program inaugurated its GSC Speaker Series on February 26 with a dive into mixed realities.  Nearly 100 graduate students, faculty and community members filled the FIU CARTA Miami Beach Urban Studios for An Evening with Cathy Hackl where AR/VR futurist and FIU alumna Cathy Hackl (MS ’04) came to disrupt the norm.

Considered one of the foremost authorities on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) – and named #4 Top Voice in Technology globally by LinkedIn – Hackl forecasted the future of AR/VR and what communicators need to consider as they engage in mixed realities. From VR employee trainings to CGI Influencers and digital humans, there’s a lot to know and consume in the spatial computing space.  In fact, spatial computing is already changing the way people think, act and spend their leisure time – and shaking up the digital world.

CAREER AND LIFE DESIGN MASTER CLASS LAUNCHES AT CARTA

The Global Strategic Communications Creative Track program launched a Master Class multi-disciplinary initiative that aims to provide CARTA students with the knowledge, skills and tools needed to apply toward the successful completion of their degrees and fruitful job search after graduation. The initiative aims to reach across all CARTA’s disciplines, which include Communications, Architecture, Theater, Music and the Arts.

“One thing I have found with all of our students, regardless of their discipline, is the anxiety they feel about their future and what opportunities are out there for them,” said Grizelle De Los Reyes, Senior Instructor and Program Director. “One way to offset anxiety about future prospects is present action and that is what the Master Class series and other events we are planning are geared to do.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

ARCHITECTURE ALUMNUS TURNED INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER

What do architecture and photography have in common? “Nothing at all,” would be the answer given by most. Yet for Hai Zhang (M.Arch ’12), both professions spark creativity and an investigative passion.

“To me, architecture is much more beyond forms, shapes, technology or any physical presence, but really is to create a context for people. Whether as small as an individual or as broad as the society,” said Zhang. “This was one of the main reasons why I chose to study this field,” explained Zhang.

“However, after 7 years of practice in the field, I was very much frustrated by the feeling of not knowing who I was designing for and, why. I felt I didn’t know enough of society and the context. But somehow, photography opened a window for me to investigate these social backgrounds and learn more about societies through a lens.”
