COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION, ARCHITECTURE + THE ARTS

Dear CARTA family,

I would like to congratulate all of our College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) spring 2020 graduates on their achievements this semester. Even when met with unprecedented circumstances, you were able to persevere and overcome the challenges presented to you. I hope you were all able to celebrate this momentous occasion with us during the virtual commencement ceremony that took place on May 8th.

I would also like to remind students that registration for summer A is now open and classes begin May 11th. All classes for summer A, B and C will be held remotely. To register for your classes, visit MyFIU and check in with your academic advisor regularly.

Even during a time that has proved to be difficult for many, CARTA has been able to exhibit many points of pride. FIU’s South Florida Media Network won top honors for its coronavirus series Pandemic Profiles and the work of our Department of Art + Art History faculty and alumni was showcased in the feature piece, The art of serenity: landscape paintings to calm our souls to celebrate the peace and joy that art can bring during these times.

While we continue to work and learn remotely, I encourage you all to continue sharing your virtual commencement photos, virtual workspaces, projects and achievements with us by tagging @fiuCARTA on social media.

Congratulations Spring Class of 2020!

In the Spirit of the Blue + Gold,

Brian Schriner
Dean

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES

PPE initiative gets another boost from CARTA donors— and students benefit, too

CARTA and the Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS) have been at the forefront of the PPE initiative since late March when FIU partnered with Baptist Health South Florida to 3D-print 1,000 reusable face shields for health care workers. Thanks to the support from the Knight Foundation, the Ratcliffe Foundation, a stock gift transfer commitment from an anonymous donor and additional gifts from various donors, CARTA and MBUS have been able to purchase 13 additional 3D printers, to date, to expand the initiative.

John Stuart, associate dean for Cultural and Community Engagement and executive director of Miami Beach Urban Studios, said the additional 3D-printers will help FIU produce more than 100 face shields per day.

CDC TIPS FOR HEALTH & SAFETY

Avoid close contact with people who are sick, even inside your home. If possible, maintain six feet between the person who is sick and other household members.

Put distance between yourself and other people outside of your home.

Stay up-to-date with messages from the CDC regarding coronavirus protection.

CARTA IN THE NEWS

Pandemic Profiles: FIU Journalism’s South Florida Media Network wins top honors for coronavirus coverage

FIU Journalism + Media student journalists for the South Florida Media Network (SFMN) have proved they can thrive in our current situation through their contribution to valid, empathetic news, in a climate of much misinformation and negativity. The FIU team, consisting of 21 students and nine professors beat out universities such as Arizona State University and Yale University for a Society of Professional Journalists’ (SPJ) College Coronavirus Coverage (CCC) Award for their project, Pandemic Profiles.

The art of serenity: FIU Art’s landscape paintings to calm our souls

“Human beings are naturally drawn to vastness in scenery,” explains renowned artist and Chair of the Department of Art + Art History David Chang. “Landscape throughout history has served rich and poor, it’s given that quality of nature brought home. The vastness is the ever-infinite sky, it’s the depth of field, it gives human beings this calming quality. Artist or not, rich or poor, we all have that response. I’ve met very few people who would open the window on a beachfront hotel or house without saying, ‘Wow.'” Take a deep breath, curl up on your favorite spot and enjoy the beauty of art.

FIU’s Robotics Academy among top finalists for prestigious innovation award

Future jobs in architecture, engineering and construction are going to look quite different than they do today. These industries will rely heavily on automation and robotics, and FIU’s Robotics Academy is at the forefront of preparing their workforce.

For its efforts in this area, the academy has been named one of 40 finalists nationwide for a prestigious Igniting Innovation Award from the American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council (ACT-IAC). Find out how FIU became a top finalist out of 140 nominations.

FIU Architecture’s Newton D’Souza examines how home designs will change in the age of social distancing

The nature of many of our professions to conduct business and service in close proximity demands us to be confined to our homes and neighborhoods for indefinite period of time resulting in “self-isolation” or “quarantine.” What does this mean to design of homes? How will it upend the traditional meaning of our homes? What are the major social factors that will influence the homes of the future? Check out the full Op-ed on Archinect’s featured articles.

FIU School of Communication + Journalism’s Susan Jacobson and Maria Elena Villar say distinguishing ‘truth’ from ‘fake news’ is not so simple

Photographers, like journalists, make choices about what to include in the frame. “Photographers also make choices about when and where to take pictures, the physical perspective from which we view the scene, what to include and exclude when framing each photo and which moments we choose to capture.” So which images are true? Was Jacksonville Beach dangerously overcrowded on Friday, April 17, or were people behaving responsibly, staying far apart and staying home?
The answer may be: both.

Student Spotlight: Jose Reyes Kapoudjian – violinist, instructor and concertmaster of FIU Symphony

Jose Reyes Kapoudjian is a graduate student, adjunct professor and concertmaster with a deep passion for “the strings.” Some may even consider him a violin prodigy. CARTA News was able to connect with Jose to get to know more about his journey with violin and musical symphony, as well as how he is adapting to remote work. Discover Jose’s story of success.

From center stage to the classroom with FIU Theatre’s Phillip Church

Phillip Church, associate professor for FIU’s Department of Theatre and his team from WIW brought Shakespeare’s Othello to 10 high schools all across Miami-Dade just last month, before social distancing guidelines due to coronavirus were implemented.

All GableStage and WIW collaborations have featured FIU alumni – and at times even senior theatre majors still in the program at FIU. The Othello adaptation was no exception, comprised of a cast made almost entirely of FIU Theatre alumni.

FIU Architecture’s Marilys Nepomechie on Earth Week 2020: How cities can design for rising tides

In honor of Earth Week, Gensler Miami architect and sea-level rise expert Ana Benatuil speaks with Marilys Nepomechie — Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives & Professor of Architecture in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts at Florida International University — and Katherine Hagemann — Resilience Program Manager at Miami-Dade County — to discuss strategies coastal cities can consider adopting to combat the challenges of sea-level rise.

STUDENT WORK SHOWCASE

Show us how you’ve been learning and creating remotely!

We would love to hear from you! Send photos of your workspaces and/or class projects to Andrea Perez.

Art + Art History
CARTA Masters of Fine Arts graduate, Yi Chin, took advantage of this time to publish her thesis online. “The Gift Shop” aims to explore and challenge the parameters of exhibitions. It also functions as an experiment of curatorial practice as a medium in art-making. The project functions as both a literal, functioning online and pop-up shop. Take a look at her thesis on her curatorial website.
