COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION, ARCHITECTURE + THE ARTS

Dear CARTA family,

While we are preparing to welcome students back in the fall, we are being careful and are acknowledging that South Florida is the state’s COVID-19 epicenter. What we do know with certainty is that physical distancing, face coverings and other mitigation measures will be part of our proposed three-phase plan, Panthers Protecting Panthers, with students returning to campus in phase three. This plan will be presented to the Florida Board of Governors on June 23. Click here to read more about the plan.

And while we continue to work and learn remotely, our CARTA colleagues continue to provide many points of pride for FIU. For example, four of our CARTA faculty colleagues’ work were acknowledged with 2020 CARTA Faculty Awards in recognition for their excellent work in teaching, research or service. CARTA students who partook in the Environmental Protection Agency’s eighth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge earned first place out of 50 participating teams. And, one of our very own Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator fellows has been using her Ratcliffe project to help protect the community by creating face masks for the public.

As always, it is a great honor to serve as Dean for CARTA. I invite you all to read about the many prideful initiatives, events and work coming out of our college. And, if you have not yet participated in the annual CARTA Faculty + Staff Ignite Campaign or would like to support our COVID 19 CARTA CARES fund, or the FIU Strong fund, I ask that you consider making a contribution today. To make your tax-deductible donation, click here

In the Spirit of the Blue + Gold,

Brian Schriner
Dean

CARTA CLOSEUP

Two CARTA alumni,  FIU Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design alumnus, Kevin Arrieta, (’17) and FIU Architecture alumnus, Nicolas Vasquez, (’17) from VACO Studio, came together to create A Resilient Miami, a project that highlights Miami’s amazing adaptability and resiliency to our current global pandemic.

The video was a collaboration between like-minded creatives, who through their sheer passion for their city, felt compelled to create a visual ode dedicated to Miami, its residents and local frontline workers.

CARTA IN THE NEWS

Ebru Ozer, associate professor of landscape architecture, along with students, are among multi-disciplinary team to win national competition

FIU students earned first place out of 50 teams in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s eighth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge. The competition encourages students from across the country to submit green infrastructure designs and solutions to help address stormwater pollution. Check out how this proposal won them first place.

Alumnus contributes to virtual exhibit at Coral Gables Museum

Even in the midst of the pandemic, FIU Art+Art History alumni are finding opportunities to showcase their work.

In response to the recent social distancing orders, the Coral Gables Museum has transitioned to a fully online experience and are featuring new artists every Monday and Wednesday.

View alumnus Abdiel Acosta’s recent works featured as part of a virtual exhibit hosted by the Coral Gables Museum.

CARTA awards top faculty members for excellence

The College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts is proud to announce that four faculty members from the departments of communication, journalism + media and music have been awarded a 2020 CARTA Faculty Award. Check out the four CARTA faculty award winners.

From behind the lens: Combating gentrification, creating a sense of community

A main mission of FIU’s College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) is integrating disciplines that resonate amongst themselves so they can nourish each other.

It’s no wonder, then, CARTA is leading the way when it comes to interdisciplinary approaches aimed at strengthening bonds with the community. Little Haiti: Confronting Gentrification is one of the college’s latest research projects.

The initiative combines the community advocacy research of Tardanico with student photography, as it addresses the question: How do Little Haiti’s families, small businesses, and community at large attempt to cope with the neighborhood’s rapid gentrification, including dislocations and evictions? Come and see the answer for yourselves.

Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator fellow, Arina Polyanskaya, gives second-hand clothing new life

Arina Polyanskaya, a Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator fellow at the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA), is changing the stereotype around second-hand clothing—one fabric square at a time—with her business project, Re-dress.

Re-dress is an up-cycling fabric business project Polyanskaya started in 2019 as part of her Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator fellowship. The project focuses on sustainability within fabric manufacturing. Discover how Polyanskaya’s project is making a difference in her community.

Panther performances to watch during the pandemic

If you’re looking for virtual concerts to ward off cabin fever, look no further.

From Panther vocalists gracing us with the FIU alma mater song during virtual commencement to a concert featuring the FIU Jazz Big Band ensemble and a throwback performance by Grammy award winner and alumnus Tony Succar ’08, MA ’10, FIU offers a treasure trove of stellar performances packed with artists and musicians that will knock your socks off.

Here are just a few of our favorite Panther performances to keep you upbeat, uplifted and energized during the pandemic.

‘The Class Must Go On’: How FIU’s Theatre program made a live art form from work in the virtual realm

Your scene partner is delivering a line when his face freezes on the computer screen. Your little brother won’t stay quiet long enough for you to videotape a rehearsal in your childhood bedroom. Your senior production: Canceled.

This is what it was like for college theatre majors this spring semester, as courses shifted from classrooms to Zoom. The COVID-19 pandemic is upending higher education, a new reality that began in March when colleges and universities closed campuses and sent students home. Finishing the semester virtually was especially tricky for performers, who had to figure out how to translate live art forms to the virtual realm. Read about how our FIU Theatre students pulled it off.

Op-ed by FIU Interior Architecture Chair, Newton D’Souza: Time, space and adaptive reuse in the age of social distancing

In the current pandemic era, social distancing has become synonymous to maintaining “six foot distance” to contain the community spread of COVID-19. This essentially puts architectural space at a premium for both designers and the public. To mitigate these effects, could thinking of “time” as an essential design strategy benefit architecture in the era of social distancing? Check out the full op-ed in Archinect.

100+ FIU Theatre alumni and students spread throughout the country connect virtually

More than 100 theatre alumni and current students gathered on Zoom last week for the first FIU Theatre Alumni Conference. The three-day event featured seven career-focused panels on topics ranging from building sustainable careers to developing new work.

The conference was organized by members of the Department of Theatre’s Alumni Advisory Board as a way of furthering their mission to strengthen the alumni network and create bridges among alumni from different eras of FIU Theatre. Take a look at how the conference was coordinated.
