COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION, ARCHITECTURE + THE ARTS

DEAN’S NEWSLETTER

Dear CARTA Community,

CARTA faculty, staff, students, and alumni make impacts in our university and the communities we serve everyday!

Last week saw the launch of the 2018 Music Festival hosted by our School of Music. The annual series includes two weeks of performances from renowned musicians, including our own faculty, students, and alumni.

Eleven of our alumni, faculty, and staff received the first-ever ArtCenter South Florida “The Ellie” award, an award honoring visual artists in our community.

Also, 40 CARTA faculty and staff members, under the leadership of Associate Dean John Stuart, joined forces to volunteer for several professional development sessions for the 6th Annual FIU-MDCPS Arts Day.

And, this past weekend CARTA faculty and students took leadership roles in the FIU Sea Level Solutions Center’s Sea Level Solutions Day.

Please join me in congratulating our colleagues for all they do for CARTA and the communities we serve!

In the spirit of the Blue + Gold,

Brian Schriner
Dean

CARTA HEADLINES

FIU FACULTY AND ALUMS HONORED AT THE INAUGURAL ELLIE AWARDS BY ARTCENTER SOUTH FLORIDA

The Ellies celebrate the individual artists who are the backbone of Miami’s visual arts community.

“This program is a game-changer for our visual artists and for the community,” said Dennis Scholl, ArtCenter’s president and CEO. “Over the past decade, Miami’s artists have steadily built an international reputation for themselves, and have changed the way people perceive our city. The Ellies will provide our artists with the resources they need to advance their work and elevate their artistic practice.”

The Ellies are named in honor of ArtCenter’s founder Ellie Schneiderman, a visionary who, more than three decades ago, acquired several abandoned storefronts along Lincoln Road, foreseeing it as ideal for artist studios. Those storefronts grew into ArtCenter, which is credited for being a catalyst in the rebirth of Lincoln Road and South Beach.

SEA LEVEL SOLUTIONS DAY HOSTED BY CARTA’S EYE ON THE RISE AND SEA LEVEL SOLUTIONS CENTER

On Saturday, Florida International University hosted a “Sea Level Solutions Day” in Miami-Dade County. The public was invited to help FIU researchers collect water samples and take photographs of King Tide flooding. Participants in Sea Level Solutions Day get the chance to be “citizen scientists” and help researchers collect water samples.

Participants started at the Miami Rowing Club on Key Biscayne, where they received sampling kits and training from the scientists. They went to sites throughout Miami-Dade to take water samples and photos for an app. The data will be used to improve maps of where and when flooding occurs.

The project is in conjunction with FIU’s “Eyes on the Rise” project, where residents can enter an address and see how much a foot (or two or three) of sea-level rise might impact their home.
