COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION, ARCHITECTURE + THE ARTS

Welcome | Dean’s Newsletter

Welcome to the October edition of the Dean’s Newsletter!

We began this new academic year by taking time to reflect on and celebrate our collective accomplishments, but – as we move through the Fall 2018 semester- we also remain focused on pushing new boundaries in pursuit of the goals outlined in CARTA’s strategic plan, CARTA 2020: Our Future is Now!

I’m proud to report that last month we welcomed over 200 new, highly-talented, and motivated students to our existing 4,000+ majors. These students were the most qualified freshmen class the college has admitted to date. These students had choices of where to pursue their dreams, and they chose CARTA. They chose CARTA for several reasons, but primarily because of the quality of our faculty and professional staff; the talents of their peers and of those the distinguished alumni who graduated before them; and each department’s commitment to provide their students with a quality education — one that is full of opportunities for them to grow as individuals while preparing them for meaningful careers in the twenty-first century’s information, innovation, and creative economy.

I’m also very pleased that we continued to grow our faculty and professional staff. This fall we welcomed over 20 esteemed colleagues to the CARTA family. These colleagues came to us from across the globe. Much like our students, they had choices of where to pursue their professional goals. I know you join me in welcoming them. And, in support of our student learning and our faculty’s teaching, research, engagement, and creative activities, CARTA continues to partner with industry to fund ground-breaking initiatives and improved facilities at MMC, BBC, New York City, and Washington, DC. This issue of the newsletter highlights a few of these impactful partnerships.

I, like you, am looking forward to a great fall semester. I encourage you to visit this year’s calendar of events. Our faculty and students continue to produce some of our community’s most innovative and creative work. There is literally something for everyone: concerts, theatre productions, exhibitions, lectures, and master classes.  I also want to take this opportunity to thank you — our students, faculty, professional staff, alumni, and board members  — for your support and to congratulate you on your numerous accomplishments. You have a lot to be proud of, and I am honored to serve as dean of such a distinguished and engaged college.

Thank you for everything you do to make CARTA special.

Brian Schriner
Dean

CARTA IN DC

Equity and Equality of the Sexes in Communication
Presented by Lilian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication

Thursday, October 4 | 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
FIU in DC
440 1st Street NW, Suite 860 Washington, D.C. 20001

Women earn less, experience negative company cultures and still face a glass ceiling in the communications industries

Clear, objective and robust communications reported or distributed by individuals representative of the population they serve are the foundation of a democracy. Even though women make up more than half the population of the United States, and also compose three-fourths of the graduates of college and university communication schools today, a survey of the communication industries in 2018 revealed the following highlights:

  • Women earn lower salaries than men
  • Women are more likely to spend fewer years in the communications professions than men and lack longevity in their current positions
  • More women are middle managers and in junior level positions, while men dominate top management positions
  • The culture of the company often prevents women from being promoted in favor of men
  • Most communicators, both men, and women, enter their positions without any digital training and do not receive digital training in their current jobs
