This summer, Associate Teaching Professor, Chris Goslin, worked as the technical director for Northwestern University’s National High School Institute: Theatre Arts Division. The program brings high school students from around the nation for immersive educational experiences in the summer. As technical director, Goslin oversaw the technical aspects of six fully realized productions put on over the course of the summer, teaching students in the scene shop through practical experience.
The productions included The Iliad by Lisa Peterson and Dennis O’Hare, Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw, Fefu and Her Friends by Maria Irene Fornes, The Vampires by Manna Symone Middlebrooks, Box of Stories by JS Puller, and The Mouse That Roared by Christopher Sergel.
“As the Technical Director for the summer theatre program, I worked closely with professional scenic designers to build scenery for the six designated shows for the summer,” says Goslin. “All shows were built by the students enrolled in the NHSI program within a 4 to 5 week rehearsal and construction period. All six shows were performed in repertory, where as many as 4 shows were performed a day. The changeover of scenic elements was done safely by student crews under my supervision.”
