Florida International University’s School of Communication + Journalism (SCJ) and Sony Music Latin have made history this semester. The two entities have come together to create the first-of-its-kind formal program between a university and Sony Music Latin, which will continue for future semesters. Thanks to Rudy Vila, Assistant Vice President of Business Services for FIU, SCJ was able to spearhead this initiative.
FIU SCJ staff collaborated with Sony Music staff members such as Aileen Fernandez, Audience Development Manager; Henry Lescaille, Vice President | HR Business Partner; and Jose Abreu, Vice President | Digital Strategies to select the program’s qualified interns for the Fall 2019 semester.
“Colleges and Universities have always fostered the music communities that not only influence the sounds of today, but also build the companies of tomorrow,” said Abreu. “It’s our responsibility to the artist community that we foster these relationships and give them a platform.”
Four Communication + Journalism students were chosen to join the company as marketing representatives and influencers:
- Armando Nabut (Marketing Representative)
- Jose Valle (Influencer)
- Maria Paula Velez (Influencer)
- Camila Insuasti (Influencer)
Students will not only gain real-world experience, but can also work with Sony Music leadership and contracted artists while collaborating on events with fellow FIU students, which makes the experience even more so appealing.
Interns like Camila Isuasti are able to build their professional skillsets while engaging with a company that piques their personal interests: “There is nothing better than Sony Music Latin… I’m pumped about this internship as I will acquire marketing skills, my ideas will turn into work, and my work will be enjoyed by thousands of people.” Maria Valdez expresses her excitement to work with Sony Music Latin because “…it helps me work on what I have learned in school about business and marketing ourselves.” We can’t wait to see where this inaugural partnership takes our students and how the program evolves throughout the semesters.
