On November 30th, the FIU chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) hosted their awards ceremony “Voces Del Periodismo” at the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus.
Journalism students from all over the country submitted their journalistic works in both Spanish and English to be evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges. The panel consisted of Erika Carrillo, nominated by New Times as the best TV reporter for her investigative work in Miami; José Ángel Gonzalo, Senior Director/Editor-in-chief of Univision Noticias Digital; Juan Jesús Manrique, adjunct professor in the Spanish-language Journalism Master’s Program and Telemundo TV personality; and Pamela Silva, On-Air Talent for Univision. The journalistic works evaluated across topics in one of three categories: Photojournalism, Audiovisual Production, or Written Report.
During the awards ceremony, the winner’s works were celebrated with the judges and other industry professionals offering advice and words of encouragement. The successful event packed Panther Square with families, students, journalists and the full board of the South Florida NAHJ. Univison Anchors, as well as present and former FIU students Erick Cuesta and Carolina Sarassa, were also in attendance. Guests enjoyed a led by the multitalented Costa Rican visual artist and singer Gabriela Squivel.
Most of the winning stories have been published with the South Florida News Service.
