CARTA’s Miami Urban Future Initiative (CARTA | MUFI) welcomes the inaugural cohort of research fellows. The goal of the program, housed in the multi-disciplinary College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, is to help the region fill an existing research gap in economic, entrepreneurial, creative, and technological assets in the Greater Miami region.
“As Miami’s innovation economy continues to expand and becomes a hub for entrepreneurial opportunities it’s imperative that we incorporate the community in this process,” said Brian Schriner, dean of the College of Communication + The Arts. “These fellows joining the inaugural cohort will bring a fresh perspective to this considerable innovation network.”
CARTA | MUFI and the Fellows are funded by a $1.2 million Knight Foundation Grant directed by Brian Schriner, dean of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts. Miami Urban Research Fellows are global thought-leaders, practitioners, and research professionals who will examine pressing economic and urban development challenges impacting Miami’s status as a global city. Unifying the college’s mission where through teaching, creative activities, engagement and research drive information, innovation, and the cultural economy of South Florida and beyond, the Urban Research Fellows are tasked to conduct independent, original research resulting in a publication – scholarly and applied. These reports and findings will be disseminated widely for public consumption. In collaboration with Dr. Richard Florida, the Creative Class Group, and FIU College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, selected MUFI Research Fellows will provide thought leadership and practical, hands-on research and awareness to guide Greater Miami’s evolution as a thriving, competitive, global city.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to bolster MUFI’s capacity to provide field leading research,” said Chris Caines, Executive Director of the Miami Urban Future Initiative. “These fellows bring diverse perspectives and experience to the work and enable further inquiry into Miami’s economic future.”
This year’s fellows include:
Moses Shumow, Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University.
