The Department of Communication seeks, above all, to enroll men and women who seek to connect and communicate with others, and who wish to take advantage of the incredible resources the department has to offer. A successful Communication student is someone who combines curiosity with discipline, vision with training, and engage with both our faculty and students to both learn and contribute to the academic quality of our department.

The Department of Communication brings together 24 faculty members, five academic advisors, and 10 staff members whose main priority is student success. We are fortunate to have a diverse mix of communication scholars and practitioners all of whom contribute to the energy and productivity of the department. We invite students to get to know their professors through student organizations, research collaborations, and discussing career opportunities or graduate studies.
Our department offers three degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication with specializations in Public Relations and Advertising; a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts with tracks in Organizational Communication, Art and Performance Studies, or Design Studies; and a Master of Science in Global Strategic Communication. The B.A. in Organizational Communication and the M.S. in Strategic Global Communication are available fully online, and we expect to have a fully online option of the Bachelor of Science in Public Relations and Advertising in Fall 2017.

Communication Arts Admissions Requirements
Please be aware that admission to FIU does not constitute admission into the School of Communication + Journalism. To obtain full admission/upper division status into any of the School of Communication + Journalism’s (SCJ) majors, FIU undergraduates and transfer students must have the following minimum requirements met.
- Minimum GPA of 2.0 for all lower division courses and upper division
non-Communication Arts courses (including transfer coursework).
- Minimum GPA of 2.0 for ALL FIU courses.
Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communications (PRAAC) Admissions Requirements
Please be aware that admission to FIU does not constitute admission into the Advertising or Public Relations major. To obtain full admission/upper division status into any of those two majors, FIU undergraduates and transfer students must have the following minimum requirements met.
- 2.85 cumulative GPA
- PUR 1951 (PRAAC Orientation)
Full admission is a prerequisite for many of the upper-division courses taught in the Advertising or Journalism major.

Apply Transfer Coursework to UCC Requirements:
The Panther Degree Audit (PDA) automatically recognizes FIU courses but it is NOT programmed to automatically recognize many transfer courses. That’s why, if you are a transfer student and wish to have your transfer courses applied to the FIU UCC requirements, you will need to sit with an advisor and identify relevant transfer course work. Please contact your assigned advisor for more information.
Apply Transfer Coursework to Department of Communication Major Requirements
Transfer students may receive credit for comparable Florida state communication courses in accordance with Statue 1007.24(7) or for 6 + semester hours of communication courses previously taken at another academic institutions with a grade of ‘B’ or higher depending on evaluation of courses transferred. Each school has the discretion of using transfer course work in partial fulfillment of major requirements. For more information, contact an academic advisor.
