Mental Health on University Campuses: Current Issues and Challenges
International Seminar
Tuesday, October, 22 – Wednesday, October 23, 2019
Miami, FL
This seminar is organized by a working research team from Florida International University, University Toulouse 1 Capitole -UT1C- (France), and University Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès -UT2J- (France) will be held on October 22 and 23, 2019 in Miami (FIU). This is a trilingual scientific cooperation among North America, Latin America, and Europe, and presentations will be in French, Spanish and English. This seminar is part of an ongoing program entitled “Mental Health on University Campuses” which will be held alternately in Toulouse and Miami, and will include Buenos Aires in upcoming years.
The collaborative work among Dr. Villar, Dr Tilli and Dr Vavassori is focused on developing intercultural understandings of the topic of mental health, as it offers opportunities for dialogue from different cultural and disciplinary perspectives. The seminar brings together diverse participants from different backgrounds to have a rich and cross-reflection of a complex issue. This two-day multidisciplinary seminar will cover a wide range of topics related to mental health among college students.
As part of this unprecedented collaboration (between the Legal Institute of Space, Territories, Culture and Communication -UT1C-, the department of clinical psychology of the subject and the LCPI -UT2J- and the School of Communication from FIU) will address the theme of “Mental Health on University Campuses” from different angles. We invite you to submit your paper on the topic of: “Mental Health on University Campuses: current issues and challenges.” The idea of this first meeting is to lay the groundwork for future research.
This seminar is open to the general public and designed over two days: the first day of the seminar comprises academic and professional meetings, and the second day will focus on panels and posters with student participation. Proceedings from the seminar will be published and disseminated to participants.
Objectives
This seminar is a starting point for identifying needs and strategies to raise awareness and advance policies to address mental health issues on university campuses. This complex issue deserves attention from multiple disciplines: legal, communicational and psychological.
The triangular relationship established here between communication, psychology and law reflects the way our society faces another problematic triad: the fight against social exclusion; access to mental heath services; public policies to reduce discrimination-stigmatization; respect for rights and freedoms; and improving the quality of life of the people concerned in order to help them develop their full potential.
The specific purpose of the seminar is to enhance collaboration within the university community by presenting new scientific research by practitioners and researchers. We seek to evaluate the personal, social and economic consequences of mental health issues on academic success and well-being among students, administrative staff and faculty. The role of media and communication within the University is also a fundamental factor because of its influence and impact on the construction meaning, biases, and stereotypes. The goal is assess the of risk factors and public perceptions in order to inform prevention, screening and intervention programs.
