Hugo has taught public relations, advertising and multimedia communications classes to undergraduate and graduate students for over 15 years. He is faculty advisor to the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA chapter) and to BOLD, the student-run integrated communications agency. Hugo is certified in online and hybrid instruction. He has worked in public relations for over a decade, serving business, professional and nonprofit clients. He is also a consultant to two leading public relations firms. He serves on the leadership teams of PRSA Miami and PRSA Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Early in his career, Hugo was vice president of a national news company now known as bankrate.com. He managed reporting and research staffs that provided news and analysis to more than 50 million consumers and 30 news organizations. Later, he directed reporters covering law, real estate, business and banking as a senior editor for the Daily Business Review, a South Florida newspaper owned by ALM, formerly American Lawyer Media.
